Bazooka Inc. Workers Move Towards Strike Action
In a significant development for labor relations in the candy manufacturing industry, over 60 members of Teamsters Local 229 at Bazooka Inc., based in Moosic, Pennsylvania, have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.
The crux of the matter lies in the failure of the candy manufacturer to agree on a contract that provides not only improved wages but also affordable healthcare for its dedicated workers. Negotiations for a new agreement began back in October 2025 but have continued without resolution for several months.
Joe Secor, the business agent for Local 229, expressed the frustrations of the workers, stating, “Our members have spent decades building this company and making its products a success. Some workers have devoted more than 50 years of their lives to this facility.” He emphasized the pressing need for a fair contract that duly recognizes the contributions and hard work of the employees.
The employees of Bazooka Inc. perform critical roles that encompass various functions including production, maintenance, shipping, packaging, and quality control. This facility is notably the only one in the United States that manufactures Ring Pops, a staple product that holds a special place in candy enthusiasts' hearts nationwide.
Rick Walker, a long-time cook at Bazooka Inc. and an 18-year veteran member of Local 229, shared his sentiments on the strike authorization vote, saying, “This vote sends a clear message that we are standing together and deserve a fair contract. We take pride in the work we do every day and in the product that comes out of this facility.” Walker further emphasized the patience the workers have exercised throughout the lengthy negotiation process, stating, “We have been patient throughout this process, but enough is enough.”
The ramifications of this potential strike extend beyond the borders of the facility, impacting the local economy and supply chain. As the only manufacturer of Ring Pops in the country, Bazooka's production is a vital part of the candy market, and any disruption could have serious consequences for the availability of this beloved product.
Teamsters Local 229 is a significant union in the region, representing over 1,000 members across various industries in Northeastern Pennsylvania. With implications for labor negotiations and workers' rights, this situation is set to gain further attention as Bazooka Inc. continues to be under pressure to reach an agreement with its workforce. The workers remain united in their demand for fair treatment and the recognition of their vital contributions to the company’s success.
