Introducing CIEL: A New Makeup Palette for the Deceased by WataSelica

CIEL: The New Makeup Palette for the Deceased

WataSelica Co., headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, is excited to announce the launch of its newest product, the CIEL makeup palette, specifically designed for the deceased. Starting from November 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM, this unique 8-color palette will be available for professionals in the funeral industry, marking a significant step in enhancing the final farewell experience for families.

Background of Development

The practice of post-mortem makeup, known as shikake (死化粧) in Japan, is essential in restoring the deceased's likeness and providing comfort to grieving families. However, the market has been limited in offering specialized makeup products to address the various changes that occur after death, such as purpura, jaundice, and loss of color. Many in the profession, including funeral directors and embalmers, have expressed the need for more practical and user-friendly products.

BioBiz Corporation, a South Korean company known for developing biomedical cosmetics and funeral supplies, has created a specific cream foundation for post-mortem makeup. WataSelica collaborated with Kim Yoshimiko, director of Cure Essence Co., to adjust the colors and packaging for the Japanese market, ultimately leading to the birth of the CIEL palette.

The name ‘CIEL’ means ‘sky’ in French, representing the sky someone leaves behind, the sky they gaze upon, and the thoughts of those they leave. The 8 colors in the palette are envisioned as a compassionate bridge that connects the essence of the deceased with the emotions of their families.

Product Features

The CIEL palette boasts several key features to ensure it meets the needs of professionals:

  • - Specialized Corrections for Post-Mortem Changes: Each color is designed to address specific post-death skin transformations, suitable for countering jaundice, purpura, and loss of natural skin tone. This functionality helps recreate a natural blushing effect on the cheeks, lips, and eyelids.
  • - User-Friendly Texture: The creamy consistency makes blending easy, allowing users to achieve a wide range of shades to cater to people of different ages and skin tones. It is adaptable for use with fingers, brushes, or sponges, supporting various application methods.
  • - Safety and Comfort: The formulation prioritizes high adhesion and low oil content, accommodating dry skin and pigmentation changes post-mortem. It is also free from formaldehyde, ensuring a gentle approach for both users and families.
  • - Tailored to Professional Needs: The palette's design integrates feedback from industry experts, including embalmers and funeral directors. Its portable shape ensures ready-to-use convenience in busy working environments.

Contribution to Aftercare

With CIEL, WataSelica aims to uphold the dignity of the deceased while providing compassionate support for bereaved families. The company is committed to continually listening to feedback from industry experts to develop better products and services that respect the final moments of life.

Supervision by an Expert

The palette was developed under the supervision of Yoshimiko Shukuhara, CEO of Cure Essence Co., who holds numerous certifications, including a certified first-class funeral director recognized by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and has completed advanced training in forensic facial reconstruction.

Comments from Yoshimiko Shukuhara

"Post-mortem makeup is a quiet form of care that gently restores the essence of the deceased and provides comfort to those left behind.
