This initiative, initiated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support startups focused on resolving social issues. The company's project, known as the 'Zero Waste Project', aims to transform organic waste into hydrogen, thereby creating a circular economy model within urban settings.

Understanding the Challenges


Tokyo generates millions of tons of waste annually, a large portion of which is still incinerated. This method is a major contributor to CO₂ emissions, making it essential to find alternative strategies for waste management to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen, touted as a next-generation clean energy source, faces challenges regarding production costs and stable supply. BIOTECHWORKS-H2's solution attempts to simultaneously address these pressing issues.

The Tokyo Co-inNovators Initiative


Launched to stimulate startups with innovative products and services aimed at solving social issues, the Tokyo Co-inNovators program helps facilitate potential partnerships between these startups and various organizations. Starting in 2024, this initiative will support concept verification and implementation of business models in partnership with established businesses and institutions. The program is a strategic move to bolster innovative efforts in environmental sustainability.

How the 'Zero Waste Project' Works


The Zero Waste Project from BIOTECHWORKS-H2 focuses on utilizing non-recyclable organic waste, converting it into high-purity hydrogen through gasification instead of incineration. This hydrogen can then be transformed into renewable energy for local communities. By incorporating advanced technologies such as IoT and AI into waste sorting and optimization processes, the company aims to visualize resource recycling rates and CO₂ reduction impacts. They project that, with support from Tokyo, they will be able to conduct further validations that potentially reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80% while ensuring waste management and self-sustaining energy generation coexist.

Market Demand and Social Impact


The hydrogen market is projected to grow to around 15 trillion yen by 2030, indicating substantial potential for urban-based decentralized supply models. BIOTECHWORKS-H2’s approach directly addresses the need for reducing municipal waste management costs, enhancing energy security, and supporting companies in their decarbonization strategies, ultimately benefiting the local economy.

Future Prospects


With a processing capacity of 200 tons per day, the startup estimates it can generate up to 20 tons of hydrogen daily. This amount translates to a maximum power generation capacity of approximately 250 MWh, enough to supply electricity to around 20,000 households. The goal is not only to reduce CO₂ emissions but also to create a viable economic model where waste management and energy revenues are aligned. The company plans to expand this model nationally and internationally, aiming for operational plants in multiple locations by 2030. They also foresee this project serving as a model for local energy supply systems, contributing to the circular economy.
