BrainPOP Appoints New CEO: Lorin Thomas-Tavel

On July 10, 2025, BrainPOP, a well-known education platform catering to K-12 students, revealed its latest leadership change with the appointment of Lorin Thomas-Tavel as the new Chief Executive Officer. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to continued growth, innovation, and overall positive impact in the education sector.

Lorin Thomas-Tavel arrives at BrainPOP with an extensive background of over 20 years in the field of education technology. Her previous role as the Managing Director of Virtual Schools at Pearson had her overseeing one of the largest online K-12 school networks in the United States, operating across 31 states. Thomas-Tavel's experience extends further back, with senior positions at companies like 2U, where she directed the bootcamp division, and Kaplan, where she served in a variety of C-suite roles including Chief Experience Officer and Chief Operating Officer.

Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, Chair of the Board at BrainPOP, expressed strong confidence in Thomas-Tavel's capabilities. He stated, "Thomas-Tavel is a visionary leader with a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in K-12 education. As we enter our next chapter of growth and innovation, we are confident that her experience and passion for driving reach and impact in education will elevate our mission to empower educators and students across the country.”

As Chief Executive Officer, Thomas-Tavel is expected to focus on expanding BrainPOP's capabilities, enhancing partnerships with schools and districts, and leading the company’s strategic efforts to deliver quantifiable academic outcomes through accessible, student-centered technology.

Upon her appointment, Thomas-Tavel stated, “I am honored to join BrainPOP at such an important time for educators and students. District leaders and schools are navigating complex demands, and I believe technology should support – not complicate – the work of teaching and learning. I look forward to building on BrainPOP's strong foundation and helping to shape what comes next.”

BrainPOP is noted for its ability to inspire curiosity-driven instruction in classrooms, transforming intricate ideas into engaging learning experiences that benefit both educators and students. Currently, the platform serves more than 25 million students across the nation, empowering teachers to deliver lessons that not only meet students where they are but also foster essential critical thinking skills and deeper connections.

Founded in 1999 by Dr. Avraham Kadar, a pediatrician and immunologist, BrainPOP has established itself as a trusted resource among educators and parents alike for more than two decades. The company has gained subscriptions in over two-thirds of U.S. school districts and is recognized for its effectiveness in raising academic achievement for K-12 learners. Notably, BrainPOP was acquired in 2022 by KIRKBI, the investment company behind the LEGO brand, marking its first foray into the realm of digital learning.

As the educational landscape continues to evolve, Thomas-Tavel’s leadership at BrainPOP holds the potential to significantly impact the education technology sector, helping to navigate the varying demands faced by schools and districts while ensuring that learners receive the quality education they deserve. Stay tuned for what this new chapter brings for BrainPOP under Lorin Thomas-Tavel's guidance.
