A Celebration of Art and Resilience at the Edinburgh International Festival 2026

The 2026 Edinburgh International Festival is set to commence with an exciting lineup of performances and artistic collaborations from August 7 to August 30. Under the leadership of renowned violinist and festival director Nicola Benedetti, this year’s theme, All Rise, encourages a spirit of unity and creativity among an array of artists from varying disciplines.

As the original festival that shaped Edinburgh into the Festival City it is today, this year's event promises to be particularly special. In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, the festival will prominently feature American artists and stories, making it a cornerstone of this year’s program.

Over 2,000 artists from 46 countries will participate in approximately 147 performances throughout Edinburgh. Major ensembles include the San Francisco Ballet, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The latter’s performance is notably historic, as it marks the farewell of founding artistic director Wynton Marsalis after four decades of leading the orchestra.

Scottish talent will also shine bright at the festival, with more than 700 artists taking part. Highlights include the world premiere of Scottish Opera's production titled The Galloping Cure, in addition to an open-air spectacle called Together We Rise, which will unite over 300 performers in a symphonic celebration of Scotland and the United States.

In addition to the performance offerings, the festival aims to deepen dialogue around important historical narratives. One significant element of the program is the Legacy Museum's first international exhibition, brought from Montgomery, Alabama, to the Playfair Library at the University of Edinburgh. This exhibition presents the work of the Equal Justice Initiative, confronting the history and legacy of slavery in the United States through an evocative and educational lens.

Festival Director Nicola Benedetti shared her vision for this year’s festival, stating, “Our 2026 Edinburgh International Festival is an invitation to All Rise.
