Celebrating Excellence: APUS Annual Commencement 2026
The American Public University System (APUS), encompassing both the American Military University (AMU) and American Public University (APU), is gearing up for a significant milestone: its 30th annual commencement. Scheduled for May 8-9, this event is notable not just for its historic significance but also for the record number of graduates it will honor.
A Record-Breaking Class
The 2026 commencement will recognize a staggering number of graduates, including approximately 9,600 bachelor's degree recipients, over 4,300 master’s degree earners, and 23 doctoral graduates. Notably, this year’s class features a remarkable range of ages, with the oldest graduate being 78 years old and the youngest at just 16. Highlighting the diversity of the graduating cohort, more than 6.5% of graduates are under the age of 25, while nearly 4% are 55 or older.
Additionally, over 1,179 first-generation students will be celebrating their achievements, reflecting APUS's commitment to educational access and opportunity. Among the graduates, 64% are current or former military personnel, further emphasizing the institution’s dedication to serving those who serve.
Inspirational Messages and Celebrations
As part of the ceremony, attendees will have the opportunity to be motivated by keynote speakers such as retired Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Ed Hiner, who will focus on themes of resilience and leadership. Student speakers, including AMU graduate Maxwell Marsah and APU graduate Detricia Hagan, will also share their experiences and insights during the ceremonies of their respective schools.
APUS President Nuno Fernandes expressed pride in the graduates, stating, “This commencement is a celebration of perseverance, purpose, and possibilities. Our graduates showcase how the future belongs to those who embrace hard work and determination.” He emphasized the university’s mission of providing high-quality, affordable education and the valuable roles that graduates will play in their communities.
Special Events and Unique Ceremonies
In a first for the university, this year's commencement will include a dedicated doctoral hooding ceremony, celebrating those who have achieved the pinnacle of academic success. Faculty mentors will formally hood each doctoral graduate, signifying their accomplishments and transition into leadership roles. A series of special events is also planned, including "Commencement Reflections: An Afternoon Tea Series" where selected graduates can meet and share their experiences with academic leaders.
Moreover, a charity-focused 5K run/walk at National Harbor will take place, with proceeds donated to the AMU/APU Student Emergency Fund. This initiative exemplifies the institution's spirit of service and its commitment to supporting students facing unexpected challenges. Over 200 participants have already registered for the event, which aims to foster community while raising funds for those in need.
The festivities will culminate in Grad Fest, a welcoming, informal gathering designed for graduates and their families to celebrate their accomplishments, explore university resources, and connect with faculty and peers. This free event is a chance for the APUS community to bond and reflect on the journey they have shared.
Recognition of Excellence
In addition to the graduation ceremonies, APUS will honor distinguished students, faculty, and alumni for their contributions to the university and broader community through the 2026 University Awards. This includes recognizing notable achievements in service, leadership, and innovation among current and past students.
As this dynamic university celebrates its legacy of over
34 years and 166,000 alumni worldwide, the class of 2026 is poised to carry forward its rich tradition of excellence, service, and community impact.
