Helsinki's Remarkable Sustainability Achievement

Helsinki has once again claimed the prestigious top spot in the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, marking its third consecutive year at the forefront of global sustainability efforts in tourism. The GDS Index, which evaluates over a hundred cities around the world, focuses on environmental performance, supply chain management, destination governance, and social sustainability, utilizing more than 70 indicators in its assessment.

Nina Vesterinen, the Director of Tourism for the City of Helsinki, expressed immense pride in this recognition, stating, "Securing the top position for the third consecutive year demonstrates that sustainability is not a one-off achievement but a long-term strategic commitment. This recognition reaffirms that Helsinki is moving in the right direction and inspires us to continue raising the bar."

This year’s results coincide with the rollout of the EU’s 'Empowering Consumers Directive' (EmpCo), aiming to strengthen sustainability claims by ensuring they are backed by independently verifiable data. Vesterinen noted, "Considering the EmpCo directive, topping this year's GDS Index is one of the proofs that Helsinki's sustainability efforts are not just words, but are measurable and verifiable."

Collaborative Efforts Drive Helsinki's Success

The collective efforts of Helsinki's various stakeholders contribute significantly to its sustainability ranking. The city boasts an increasing number of companies holding environmental certifications, alongside a shift towards climate-friendly production of district heating and electricity. Vesterinen remarked, "Achieving the top ranking in the GDS Index reflects the strength of collaboration in Helsinki. For years, the city, tourism, event businesses, and numerous partners have worked together to enhance the sustainability of our destination."

For travelers, this ranking may serve as an attractive incentive to visit a city that values sustainability. Indeed, 98% of hotels with over 50 rooms in Helsinki are now environmentally certified, a striking contrast to the European average of just 10%. As Helsinki continues to excel in sustainability metrics, it sets a benchmark for other cities striving to enhance their green credentials.

Future Goals and Continuous Improvement

While this year’s score of 93% in the GDS Index is commendable, Vesterinen emphasized that Helsinki has no intention of resting on its laurels. Plans are already underway to improve upon this achievement. The City of Helsinki is introducing various sustainability initiatives, such as the 'Sustainability Leaders' working group within the Helsinki Makers network, which will mobilize local leaders in promoting environmentally focused activities throughout the city.

Vesterinen stated, "We are delighted with Helsinki's great ranking again, but it also sets high expectations for future performance. We intend to develop tourism and events through practices that support sustainability, ensuring year-round availability while enhancing the city's attractiveness to visitors."

Despite commendable achievements, Helsinki acknowledges the challenges it faces in maintaining its sustainability efforts in the tourism sector. Vesterinen pointed out the significant climate impact arising from international tourists arriving primarily by air and sea. As a proactive response, the city is looking to attract a larger number of both domestic and neighboring European tourists, thus reducing reliance on longer-distance travel.
