Breatheborn: A Journey of Creation and Life
From June 28 to July 10, 2025, YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA will host a captivating exhibition titled "Breatheborn" by the talented artist and flower arrangement master, Ayumi Sugiyama. Known for her unique approach to contemporary floral art, Sugiyama's latest exhibition emerges from her previous showcase, "impermanence," reflecting a transition from autumn to summer. This season of renewal stands as an inspiration for her new works that celebrate life’s resilience.
Sugiyama coined the term "Breatheborn" by blending "breathe" and "born," symbolizing the essence of creation and rebirth. This exhibition introduces new pieces inspired by the rich natural landscapes of her hometown, Miyazaki. One of the highlights is her innovative integration of the Ikenobō floral arrangement style into immersive installations, offering viewers a new perspective on the traditional art form.
Reflecting on her artistic journey, Sugiyama shared, “Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in the 100th anniversary celebration of Miyazaki City. This experience deepened my connection to my roots. I wish to explore the beauty and mystery that can only be felt now, expressing my own rebirth in the place I call 'home.'”
Her works are a testament to the beauty that lies in moments that can never be replicated. Sugiyama aims to capture the fleeting essence of life within each piece, expressing the vibrant energy and emotional flow inspired by Miyazaki’s tropical scenes and the warmth of the sun, enhancing the spectator’s experience of life’s profound beauty.
In our fast-paced world, Sugiyama invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the essential treasures within ourselves. She believes that through deep breaths, we can give birth to new ideas and emotions that enrich our existence. Attendees are encouraged to visit the gallery to immerse themselves in the artwork and experience the revival of inspiration it brings.
