Continued Partnership for a Sustainable Future
On December 8, 2025, NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), announced a new agreement with WPPI Energy, extending their collaboration to supply electricity from the Point Beach Nuclear Plant located in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. This agreement ensures WPPI Energy will continue to receive 168 megawatts (MW) of power, a vital addition to their energy portfolio, into the 2050s.
Importance of Nuclear Energy in the Upper Midwest
As the demand for electricity continually rises across the Upper Midwest, the significance of reliable, carbon-free energy sources becomes increasingly evident. NextEra Energy Resources President and CEO Brian Bolster emphasized this point, stating, "As demand for electricity continues to grow across the Upper Midwest, long-term access to nuclear generation is more important than ever. We're proud to continue collaborating with WPPI Energy and supplying them with power from Point Beach for years to come."
WPPI Energy, a member-owned, not-for-profit energy provider serving 51 locally owned utilities across Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan, has relied on the Point Beach facility to meet its energy needs. WPPI Energy President and CEO Mike Peters reiterated the value of this partnership, saying, "We value our long-standing collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources and the power Point Beach Nuclear provides. Securing this carbon-free baseload resource into the 2050s supports our membership's long-term strategy of maintaining a diverse, stable power supply in a rapidly changing industry."
A Historical Perspective
The backing for this agreement comes after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) sanctioned Point Beach's license renewal in September, allowing the facility to operate for an additional 20 years. Situated south of Green Bay, Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant stands as Wisconsin's only operational nuclear power facility, contributing nearly 15% of the state's energy needs. The plant's two reactors have the capability to generate enough electricity to power close to 1 million homes and businesses.
NextEra Energy Resources is a recognized leader in energy infrastructure development in the United States. As of the end of 2024, the company had approximately 33,410 megawatts of net generating capacity and operates a diverse range of energy portfolios that encompass renewables, battery storage, natural gas, and nuclear energy. The commitment to transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions reflects NextEra's larger strategy within the energy market.
WPPI Energy's mission centers around providing reliable and affordable power to its member utilities, which serve over 220,000 homes and businesses in the Midwest. Their cooperative approach fosters a diverse and competitive energy supply while enabling joint actions that pave the way for technological advancements and policy advocacy in the energy sector.
Looking Ahead
As the agreement solidifies the long-term flow of nuclear-generated power, it sets a benchmark for collaboration in the energy sector. The ongoing relationship between NextEra Energy Resources and WPPI Energy exemplifies a commitment to sustainability and security in energy supply, which is paramount in an era of increasing environmental and economic challenges. Together, they are not just ensuring a continued supply of power, but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for the communities they serve.
