Sapporo Game Camp 2025: Celebrating the Future of Gaming in Hokkaido

Sapporo Game Camp 2025: A Celebration of Gaming

The Sapporo Game Camp 2025 (SGC2025) was held from October 17 to 19, 2025, becoming one of the largest gaming events in the region, attracting approximately 1,900 participants. Organized by the Sapporo Game Camp Executive Committee, led by Takaya Segawa from Sega Sapporo Studio, this year marked the fourth installment of this annual celebration of digital entertainment and game creation in Sapporo.

Purpose of the Event

SGC2025 aimed to foster the development of local game creators and further promote digital entertainment. This event saw the participation of 15 gaming companies based in Sapporo, working together to create an immersive experience for attendees. Notably, the main program, “Game Jam,” attracted around 160 participants, including professional staff, making this one of the most significant gaming events in Japan.

A Packed Schedule of Events

Talk Sessions

Kicking off the event on the first day, several talk sessions took place, featuring both new and veteran creators from Sapporo. Approximately 1,400 aspiring game developers and students gained insights into job hunting, the intricacies of game development, and valuable advice from industry professionals during a total of ten sessions.

Keynote Speech

Following the talk sessions, attendees were treated to a keynote speech titled “The Power to Create from Zero to One.” Legendary creators, including Keiji Inafune, the mind behind the iconic “Mega Man” series, shared their experiences and perspectives on navigating the gaming industry, providing crucial motivation and insights for the audience.

Game Jam: Real-time Game Development

The highlight of SGC2025, the Game Jam, had around 160 participants divided into 20 makeshift teams. Tasked with creating a game over just two days, each group interpreted the theme ‘Kakuchou’ (expansion) creatively, resulting in 20 unique games. This initiative provided participants with firsthand experience of teamwork and the challenges of game development.

Puyo Puyo Programming Workshop

On day two, a programming workshop was held utilizing the source code of Sega’s popular puzzle game, Puyo Puyo. Led by a certified pro player and former systems engineer, approximately 50 students learned the basics of coding by working with JavaScript to modify game elements. This interactive experience was designed to accommodate varying skill levels from elementary to high school students.

Sonic Rumble Mini eSports Tournament

An exciting new addition to SGC2025 was the mini eSports tournament featuring Sonic Rumble, a party royale game set to release in November 2025. This attracted participants of all ages, including roughly 60 individuals from elementary students to adults, who engaged in thrilling multiplayer matches.

Introduction to CG Design

The final day offered a ‘First CG Course’ for around 70 students ranging from elementary school first graders to high schoolers. They learned basic 3D modeling by manipulating a model of ‘Ghosts,’ creating items, and adjusting character sizes. Participants were encouraged to engage actively, resulting in an enthusiastic environment for learning 3D design.

Networking Opportunities at the Corporate Booths

SGC2025 also featured corporate booths allowing attendees to connect directly with local gaming companies. Around 10 gaming firms showcased their work and provided portfolio reviews, employment consultations, and opportunities for Q&A sessions. This became a vital networking opportunity for budding professionals eager to enter the gaming industry.

Voices from Participants

Participants expressed their excitement about the experiences gained during Game Jam, such as tackling challenges while collaborating with new people and the satisfaction of completing a game in a compressed timeframe. Others emphasized the significance of being proactive in game development, showcasing the event's educational value.

The Future of Sapporo's Gaming Scene

Sapporo is home to nearly 70 companies specializing in game development and CG animation, and recently, the expansion of new enterprises has accelerated. The Sapporo Game Camp Executive Committee aims to further nurture local talent and extend the reach of the digital entertainment sector in Sapporo and Hokkaido. Upcoming international eSports events slated for 2025 demonstrate the city's growing influence in the gaming world.
