A New Perspective on U.S. Energy Storage
On December 9, 2025, the Clean Energy Research Institute will host a groundbreaking seminar entitled,
"Exploring a New Era in the U.S. Energy Storage Market," which aims to delve into the rapidly expanding Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) landscape. The seminar will be conducted by Yukio Sakaguchi, a renowned expert in clean energy.
Seminar Details
The seminar is scheduled to take place from 2 PM to 5 PM at the Kioi Forum, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. For those who prefer to attend remotely, the event will also be available via a live Zoom webinar and archived for two weeks for convenient viewing.
The Importance of Energy Storage
As the adoption of renewable energy sources accelerates, coupled with the proliferation of AI data centers, the U.S. power system is transitioning to a structure that increasingly relies on energy storage. In states like California and Texas, large-scale storage facilities, each capable of several gigawatt-hours (GWh), are starting to operate, marking a new era where battery storage is as crucial as generation facilities in stabilizing the grid.
However, with the recent political changes, particularly the inauguration of the Trump administration's second term, federal renewable energy support policies are undergoing substantial revisions. This includes the suspension of certain subsidies related to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a halt on new project permits on federal land, and a reassessment of tax credit conditions—all actions that are reshaping the very foundation of renewable energy and storage initiatives.
The Seminar Focus
This seminar will provide a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. storage market from three critical angles: policy, technology, and business models. Key topics will include:
1.
Policy and Market Trends:
- Transition point in federal policies.
- Shift towards state-led initiatives.
- Changes in power market structures.
- Demand for storage in light of transmission constraints.
2.
Technological Framework and Industrial Structure:
- From lithium-ion to long-duration storage solutions.
- Modularization and scalability of BESS.
- Supply chain restructuring.
- Addressing safety and reliability issues.
3.
Business Models and Investment Strategies:
- Revenue structures for utility-scale BESS.
- Emerging trends in corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and decentralized storage.
- Structure of private capital entry into the market.
- Opportunities for Japanese companies within this evolving landscape.
4.
Q&A Session and Networking:
- An interactive Q&A segment will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker and network with industry professionals.
Please be aware that the program schedule is subject to change based on current developments in the energy sector.
