FirstEnergy Foundation’s Holiday Donations
In a heartwarming initiative, Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), has made a significant difference this holiday season by donating a total of
$40,000 to two deserving nonprofit organizations in Maryland and West Virginia. The donations, announced on December 19, 2024, consisted of
two $20,000 gifts aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of the local communities served by the company. The selected organizations,
Operation Second Chance and
Stars That Shine, have been commended for their outstanding commitment to improving the quality of life for those in need.
The Impact of Donations
Lorna Wisham, President of the FirstEnergy Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm about the donations, stating, "We’re pleased to make these donations to two organizations that are doing extraordinary work and providing meaningful support to Maryland and West Virginia communities we serve." The recipients were chosen uniquely by FirstEnergy employees, emphasizing the importance of local involvement and the identification of community needs.
Operation Second Chance
Based in
Montgomery County, Maryland, Operation Second Chance dedicates its efforts to aiding wounded, injured, and ill combat veterans. The organization focuses on fostering relationships and addressing the immediate needs and interests of veterans and their families while also promoting public awareness of the sacrifices made by the armed forces. With the funds provided by FirstEnergy, Operation Second Chance plans to bring veterans and their families to
Heroes Ridge, a tranquil retreat situated on a sprawling 275-acre area in
Sabillasville, Maryland. Here, the veterans find opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and healing alongside their loved ones.
Cindy McGrew, the CEO of Operation Second Chance, expressed gratitude for the grant, emphasizing its transformative potential. "At Heroes Ridge, veterans and their families find a safe and nurturing environment to reconnect, heal and build resilience. This funding covers essential costs, including accommodations and therapeutic activities, ensuring that every participant feels cared for and empowered."
Stars That Shine
On the other hand,
Stars That Shine, serving the
Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, focuses on mentoring young girls and women. The organization aims to empower its participants, enhancing self-esteem through various programs and services that tackle academic success and career readiness. With the new funding, Stars That Shine intends to revive its high school program in early 2025, creating pathways for educational support and mentorship.
Alisha Puller, Executive Director of Stars That Shine, highlighted the significance of the donation, stating, "This donation will enable us to empower, educate, and lead girls at the high school level, providing not only academic support but mentorship and leadership training, fostering a community where girls can thrive."
The 'Gifts of the Season' Campaign
Initiated in 2016, the "Gifts of the Season" campaign by FirstEnergy aims to support nonprofit organizations that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. To date, the campaign has provided approximately
$1.1 million to various nonprofits making a difference in their communities. Notably, to qualify for these gifts, organizations must be first-time recipients of the FirstEnergy Foundation grant and align with certain diversity criteria.
As FirstEnergy continues its commitment to serving its communities, it reaffirms its core values of integrity, safety, reliability, and operational excellence. With
Potomac Edison supporting around
285,000 customers in Maryland and
