A Journey Through the Artistic Cafés of 19th Century Paris
The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo, is excited to announce an upcoming exhibition titled
“Artists Gathering at the Café: From Impressionism to Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso.” This remarkable event, running from
June 13 to September 23, 2026, invites art lovers to dive deep into the world of 19th-century Paris, where revolutionary artists and thinkers converged in café settings to share ideas, inspire each other, and create groundbreaking art.
In the late 1800s, Paris’ cafés became intellectual hubs, a mixing ground for painters, writers, and critics. Not just places for food and drink, these cafés also fostered new artistic movements and public engagement, departing from the confines of traditional salons. This exhibition aims to encapsulate that vibrant culture, displaying works by notable artists such as Impressionists, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso. Visitors will encounter around
130 masterpieces that demonstrate the creativity and camaraderie born from these lively social spaces.
As part of this exhibition, BAR S, a venue operated by Shiseido Parlour in Ginza, will collaborate to provide a unique cocktail experience inspired by the showcased art. Two exclusive cocktails themed on the artistry of 19th-century Paris will be available during specific periods throughout the exhibition:
1.
La Nuit (The Night) — Priced at 2,300 yen (tax included), this cocktail is available from
June 13 to July 31. It embodies the enchanting atmosphere of the Parisian night that artists frequented, offering a taste of the nightlife that sparked creative genius.
2.
Madeleine — Available from
August 1 to September 19, this cocktail is inspired by Ramón Casas’ artwork of the same name. Priced at
2,500 yen (tax included), it pays homage to the way absinthe was traditionally enjoyed in the 19th century. Guests will experience a unique serving style, where a sugar cube soaked in absinthe offers an aromatic adventure.
In addition to these themed beverages, guests ordering the special cocktails will receive an
original coaster for the exhibition, which is not available for sale. This coaster also grants a
300 yen discount on the general admission ticket for the exhibition. Whether purchased online or at the museum, this offer is valid throughout the duration of the exhibit, allowing art enthusiasts to further enjoy the experience.
The BAR S location offers a sophisticated ambiance with a seasonal flair, located on the
11th floor of the Shiseido Building in Ginza. Operating hours are
3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with last order at
10:30 PM. Please note that the bar is closed on Sundays, Mondays, national holidays, and during the year-end and New Year period.
This partnership enhances the immersive experience of
“Artists Gathering at the Café,” making it a must-visit for anyone interested in art history, café culture, or the legacy of Paris as an artistic epicenter. By bridging the gastronomic delights of BAR S with the captivating narratives of art history, visitors are offered a delightful glimpse into the past.
