Luup Expands Micro-Mobility Service in Tokyo

In an exciting development for urban transportation, Luup Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has announced the introduction of its micro-mobility service, LUUP, in the Edogawa, Katsushika, and Adachi districts. This service expansion will be available starting February 9, 2026, and marks a significant step towards providing accessible transportation across all 23 wards of Tokyo.

Background of Luup

Founded in July 2018, Luup aims to transform urban mobility, encapsulated succinctly in its mission to create an infrastructure that makes every neighborhood feel like a station plaza. By addressing the mobility challenges faced across Japan, Luup has continually developed its services with a focus on community needs. Currently, Luup boasts over 16,000 ports and has seen downloads of its app exceed 5 million, cementing its place as one of the largest micro-mobility sharing services in the country.

Since launching in May 2020, Luup has steadily expanded its services, starting from central Tokyo and collaborating with local governments and communities to promote safe and effective utilization of its micro-mobility options. With the introduction of ports in Edogawa, Katsushika, and Adachi, users will now have comprehensive access to Luup services throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Characteristics of the New Areas

The newly serviced areas of East Tokyo offer a unique mixture of serene residential neighborhoods and bustling shopping districts. Nonetheless, these regions face issues with north-south transit and access to areas distant from train stations. The introduction of LUUP is expected to not only fill this transportation gap but also elevate the transportation options available to locals. Moving forward, Luup emphasizes increasing the number of vehicles and ports while ensuring community safety through close collaboration with local law enforcement and authorities.

Key Ports Introduced

The following are some of the major ports being introduced:
  • - Kameari Station (Katsushika): Located at 5-34 Kameari, Katsushika-ku, this port can accommodate up to 58 vehicles.
  • - Saison Saranuma (Adachi): Situated at 1-13-6 Saranuma, Adachi-ku, it has a capacity of 10 vehicles.

To explore other available ports, users can easily check the map feature in the LUUP application.

Features of LUUP Service

  • - Service Type: Micro-mobility sharing
  • - Details: Users can access electric scooters, pedal-assist bicycles, and electric skateboards using the LUUP app, facilitating movements from one port to another throughout the city.
  • - Pricing: The ride starts at a base fee of 50 yen (tax included) plus a time fee of 15 yen per minute (tax included). Note that some areas may have different rates.
  • - Launch Date: February 9, 2026, at 10 AM
  • - Total Ports Available: 38, with additional ports planned.

Safety and Insurance

To utilize electric scooters and skateboards, users need to register their age verification documents and pass a traffic rules test within the app successfully. Additionally, in case of an accident while using LUUP, insurance covers damages to property, injuries to others, and personal injuries.

For those interested in introducing LUUP ports, Luup is seeking property owners with available spaces or unused areas for port installation. More information can be found on their website.
