Ontario International Airport to Celebrate 35 Years of ADA Impact with Public Event

Ontario International Airport Celebrates 35 Years of the ADA

In a significant event honoring the milestone of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), Ontario International Airport (ONT) is set to host a public celebration on July 24, 2025. This gathering will take place in the Terminal 4 baggage claim area from 10 to 11 a.m., coinciding with Disability Pride Month, highlighting the strides made in accessibility.

The ADA, signed into law on July 26, 1990, has transformed the travel landscape for millions of individuals with disabilities. The impact of this legislation can be seen throughout ONT, influencing its infrastructure, services, staff training, and overall culture. Atif Elkadi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), emphasized, "Accessibility is fundamental to our mission of delivering a safe, seamless, and welcoming travel experience. The ADA has elevated expectations in air travel, and we honor that legacy while continuing to enhance airport accessibility."

Key Improvements Showcased

During the event, ONT will spotlight several critical enhancements driven by the ADA that have been pivotal in creating an inclusive atmosphere for all travelers:

1. More Accessible Terminals
As mandated by the ADA, airport terminals have seen upgrades to accommodate those with mobility, hearing, and vision impairments. ONT has installed curb cuts, tactile signage, accessible parking, elevators, lowered ticket counters, and accessible restrooms. Currently, the airport is upgrading its second-floor restrooms in both terminals as part of its TSA checkpoint expansion project.

2. Wheelchair Assistance Services
All airlines serving ONT are required by the ADA to provide wheelchair assistance from curbside to gate, including during boarding and deplaning. This service ensures that mobility challenges do not hinder the travel experience for individuals who rely on it.

3. Enhanced Communication Systems
In alignment with ADA standards, the airport has invested in accessible communication technologies. This includes high-contrast visual paging systems, large-font electronic displays, and clear audible gate announcements. Recent upgrades feature a new paging system and improved terminal signage to facilitate easier navigation for all travelers.

4. Service Animal Relief Areas
Recognizing the significance of service animals, the ADA has encouraged airports to create designated relief areas. ONT features "Barking Lots" located conveniently near Gate 210 in Terminal 2 and Gate 410 in Terminal 4, catering to both travelers and their service animals.

5. Staff Training and Non-Discrimination Standards
The ADA's prohibition against discrimination based on disability is strictly adhered to at ONT. Regular workshops and training programs are conducted for airport staff and airline partners, enhancing their understanding and ability to assist passengers with diverse needs.

Invitation to the Community

Travelers, community partners, and local media are invited to attend this celebratory event on July 24, marking not only the anniversary of the ADA but also recognizing ongoing efforts to ensure air travel inclusivity for everyone.
