East Idaho Credit Unions Collaborate to Launch $100 Million Home Financing Initiative

New Hope for Homeownership in East Idaho

In a significant move to boost homeownership, four credit unions in East Idaho have united to launch the Welcome Home program. This initiative, supported by the GoWest Foundation, aims to provide $100 million in financing specifically for first-time homebuyers. The unique aspect of this program is its zero-down payment offer, allowing individuals and families to transition from renting to owning their homes, a growing necessity as housing costs continue to rise.

As reported by the National Association of Realtors, the share of first-time homebuyers was 32% in 2023, an increase from 26% in the previous year. The surge is indicative of a broader trend, where soaring home prices and rents have compelled many to seek ownership options. Alarmingly, nearly half of adults aged 18 to 29 are living with their parents— a statistic reminiscent of the Great Depression era.

The Welcome Home program aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by prospective homeowners. Sharee Adkins, the Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer at GoWest, highlighted how homeownership brings stability and a sense of belonging, underscoring the program's importance in today's economic climate. The initiative not only reflects the commitment of local credit unions to their communities but also aims to tackle the growing housing crisis.

The participating credit unions—Connections Credit Union, Frontier Credit Union, Idaho Central Credit Union, and Westmark Credit Union—will handle 100% financed mortgages through this program. Notably, applicants will benefit from several unique features:
  • - No private mortgage insurance requirement
  • - No origination fees
  • - Interest rates in line with standard 30-year fixed mortgages.

Jamie Simmons, CEO of Connections Credit Union, emphasized the enduring impact of homeownership on family futures and community strength. This collaboration embodies the cooperative spirit of credit unions, which base their success on helping individuals in their communities achieve financial success.

Wade Saunders of Idaho Central Credit Union expressed enthusiasm for the collective efforts to widen access to affordable home financing, enabling more families to embark on their homeownership journeys. Similarly, Adam Stewart from Frontier Credit Union celebrated the program's potential to dismantle barriers associated with down payments, empowering families to build equity and stability.

Trevor Hansen from Westmark Credit Union echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the innovative, community-driven solution to affordable housing access. The program's design includes comprehensive eligibility criteria and plans for community educational workshops. These resources will equip homebuyers with the tools necessary for maintaining financial health and understanding homeownership responsibilities.

The East Idaho Welcome Home program opens its application doors on August 3, welcoming aspiring homeowners to discover their pathways to ownership. More detailed information can be gathered either through the GoWest Foundation’s page or by reaching out to any of the participating credit unions.

This initiative has been made possible with support from the GoWest Foundation, which collaborates with credit unions and community partners throughout the Western United States to address financial challenges faced by individuals and neighborhoods.

In conclusion, the launch of the Welcome Home program marks a pivotal moment for East Idaho, aiming to create a future where homeownership is within reach for everyone ready to take their first step into a home they can truly call their own.
