Zoomlion's Innovative Push for Hybrid and Electric Technologies in Heavy Machinery
Zoomlion's Commitment to Sustainable Technologies
In a groundbreaking display of technological advancement, Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd., based in Changsha, China, recently showcased its unwavering dedication to embracing hybrid and electric technologies across its entire range of machinery. At the 7th Science and Technology Innovation Conference held on June 16, the company recognized five remarkable achievements that underscore its commitment to introducing environmentally friendly technologies in construction, agricultural, and mining equipment.
Among the standout innovations was the world's largest 300-ton electric-drive hybrid mining truck, designed to revolutionize the mining sector. This vehicle exemplifies Zoomlion's prowess in merging power with sustainability, allowing for a significant reduction in emissions associated with traditional machinery.
The accolades handed out during the conference included an exceptionally powerful hybrid tractor, advancements in electric drive technologies, and intelligent control mechanisms for heavy machinery. The portfolio also featured distributed electric drive technology for mobile cranes, a series hybrid technology with fully electric drive designed for harvesters, and a robust patent portfolio for hybrid systems in high-performance tractors integrating new energy technologies. These innovations emphasize Zoomlion's ongoing efforts to create more environmentally friendly and intelligent machinery, which are increasingly critical in today’s industrial landscape.
At the core of Zoomlion’s strategy is the establishment of a dedicated development platform for new energy technologies, which facilitates the architectural design of electric drive systems, development of core components, and technical cooperation with various business sectors. This initiative has led to the introduction of a comprehensive new energy technology product portfolio that now encompasses construction equipment, mining machinery, and agricultural machinery. The offerings include battery electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell drives, alongside battery swap and plug-in charging solutions.
In 2025 alone, the company developed nearly 60 new energy technology products and currently boasts a staggering 240 such products available in the market. This array of innovative solutions comprises complete machinery systems, batteries, engines, controllers, and fuel cell systems, supported by in-house development and testing of lithium batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
Among the award-winning innovations, the agricultural sector is a shining example of how new energy technologies are being integrated into existing systems. Zoomlion's hybrid control technology is already extensively utilized in tractors and wheat harvesters equipped with new energy solutions, contributing to a decrease in fuel consumption through more efficient energy management. For instance, Zoomlion's hybrid wheat harvester has demonstrated approximately a 30% reduction in fuel usage, while the company’s hybrid tractor has achieved savings around 8%.
The innovative chassis-by-wire technology is also utilized in Zoomlion's unmanned mining trucks, effectively enhancing operational safety through a three-tier braking architecture that combines retarder braking, electric braking, and mechanical braking, ensuring reliable performance even under demanding conditions.
Ou Biao, the director of Vehicle Control Institute at Zoomlion New Energy Technology Company, expressed that this recognition validates the engineers' hard work and serves as motivation to persist in their innovative endeavors. "Developing products driven by new energy technologies demands rigorous field testing in mines, agricultural settings, and other challenging environments. These accolades inspire us to stay close to our customers' needs and proactively tackle difficult technological challenges," he said.
Zoomlion remains steadfast in its commitment to the advancement of machines powered by new energy technologies. The company continuously seeks to bridge the gap between its engineers and customers worldwide, aspiring to better grasp local needs and adapt its innovations accordingly. As the construction and agricultural sectors evolve towards sustainability, Zoomlion’s leadership in hybrid and electric technologies positions it as a crucial player in fostering a greener industrial future.
