Tōkyū Land Corp. Joins Japan Recycle Carpet Association, Expanding Membership to 89 Companies

Expansion of the Japan Recycle Carpet Association

The Japan Recycle Carpet Association (JRCA), headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo and led by President Tadatsugu Kondo, has proudly announced the addition of Tōkyū Land Corporation as a new member, pushing the total membership to 89 companies. In the construction and real estate sectors, the integration of circular carpet tiles is becoming the new norm, with expectations of further widespread adoption.

Tile carpets are commonly found in office buildings and commercial facilities; however, the large volumes of waste generated during replacement have posed significant challenges. To tackle these issues, the JRCA is committed to promoting awareness and increasing the use of recycled tile carpets as part of its drive toward establishing a sustainable society.

With the recent inclusion of Tōkyū Land Corporation, the group now brings together companies involved in the use of tile carpets, those that recycle and repurpose discarded tiles, and manufacturers of recycled tile carpets, thereby creating a comprehensive framework for horizontal recycling.

Currently, the membership consists of 89 companies, and JRCA is committed to further amplifying efforts throughout the industry to implement and promote sustainable practices.

Statements from Leaders

Tsuneichi Hiraichi, Executive Officer of Tōkyū Land Corporation

"I would like to express my sincere respect for the activities of all members of the association. We are honored to join the Japan Recycle Carpet Association and collaborate with fellow members to promote the establishment of a circular society. As a comprehensive developer, we have pioneered initiatives in renewable energy projects under the motto 'WE ARE GREEN,' and actively engage in environmentally conscious business practices. We have collaborated with our partners and tenants to efficiently collect, sort, and recycle waste materials such as carpets generated during tenant turnover in our office buildings. Through this new association, we aim to evolve these initiatives further and balance the creation of pleasant spaces with waste reduction.

We look forward to continuing to receive guidance and support in our efforts."

Tadatsugu Kondo, President of JRCA

"Since our establishment on November 1, 2023, we have successfully welcomed 89 companies into our association within just two years. This rapid expansion reflects the urgent progress various companies are making toward decarbonization and resource recycling. The inclusion of Tōkyū Land Corporation, a major developer, symbolizes the construction and real estate sector's significant move towards resource recycling. We will continue to deepen our collaborations among member companies, focusing on improving collection schemes and the quality of recycled materials. Our goal remains to promote a sustainable society that starts from the ground up, taking steady steps toward that vision."

Objective: Established on November 1, 2023, designated as "Carpet Day," the association promotes carpet recycling. The organization has facilitated the recycled use of approximately 60 million square meters (300,000 tons) by member companies over the past 20 years. Today, about 5 million square meters of tile carpets are horizontally recycled annually, representing about 20% of Japan's tile carpet market. This achievement is made possible through the collaboration of four key groups: users, collectors, recyclers, and producers—all coming together within this organization, which transcends industry boundaries.
