World's Smallest Urban Winery Opens at Hotel New Otani Hakata in Fukuoka

Introducing the World's Smallest Urban Winery

In March 2025, Fukuoka's KYOHO Winery is set to unveil a remarkable addition to the Hotel New Otani Hakata: the world’s smallest urban winery, nestled within the brain fatigue relief salon, B-Labo. This unique facility spans only 3.1 m² and focuses on the theme of relaxation through the senses.

The Essence of Sensory Relaxation Wines

Supervised by Prof. Takehiko Fujino, a leading expert from Kyushu University on brain fatigue, the winery aims to create fruit wines that cater specifically to modern individuals burdened by information overload, stress, and chronic fatigue. Utilizing the rich fruits of Fukuoka, such as the famed Kyoho grapes and the delicious Amaou strawberries, the winery emphasizes not just the enjoyment but also the therapeutic qualities of these beverages.

Prof. Fujino's expertise in brain fatigue led to the development of what they call “fruit relaxation wines”, designed to revitalize both mind and body, promoting a state of calm and balance, or “totonou”. The motivation behind this project is to leverage the aromatic and active compounds in fermented fruits to stimulate brain activity and facilitate relaxation.

Featured Products to Indulge the Senses

The winery boasts a selection of innovative fruit wines:
1. Amaou Sparkling - Made entirely from locally sourced Amaou strawberries, this lightly sparkling drink captures rich aromas and a mellow taste, making it a vibrant refreshment ideal for any time.
2. Kyoho Gravity (Non-Alcoholic) - Known for its rich pentapeptides that reportedly enhance brain function, this exquisite juice offers the full flavor of Kyoho grapes, produced in limited batches each year to ensure quality. Its rich taste is designed to alleviate fatigue effectively.
3. Plasmalogen Brew (Coming Soon) - Targeting health-conscious consumers, this is a forthcoming product themed around “rebooting the brain and body.”

The Legacy of KYOHO Winery

Established in 1972, KYOHO Winery emerged as a pioneering venture responding to local farmers' challenges and aspirations in Kurume, Fukuoka. The winery emphasizes the complete farming process, believing that winemaking is inherently a part of agriculture. By collaborating with local farmers, KYOHO Winery continues to address issues such as utilizing excess or misfit fruits.

B-Labo's Role in Modern Society

The B-Labo aims to tackle brain fatigue - a modern-day concern tied to countless stressors and distractions. Operated by the Japan My Life Design Association, B-Labo promotes various initiatives that enable women entrepreneurs and supports those struggling in today's hectic world.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, KYOHO Winery plans to launch promotional pop-up stores at significant locations including Fukuoka Dome and local department stores. They’ll also release research data on brain fatigue and fragrance in collaboration with academic institutions in the fall of 2025 and prepare for artistic events that combine fruit wine with art and sensory spaces.
