Kolmar Korea Expands K-Beauty Sun Protection to the Scalp and Hair
A New Era in Sun Protection
Kolmar Korea, a prominent player in the global K-Beauty sunscreen boom, has announced significant advancements in sun protection tailored for natural hair and scalp care. This expansion is part of the increasing global trend of “skinification,” which encourages consumers to treat the scalp and hair as extensions of their skincare routines. As consumers become more aware of UV damage, Kolmar aims to innovate beyond traditional sunscreen products to ultimately protect the entirety of their beauty regimen.
In this latest venture, Kolmar is introducing the Scalp Sun Essence, designed specifically for the scalp and boasting an SPF50+ protection level. Unlike typical sunscreens, this product is formulated with both water-soluble and lipophilic UV filters for a lightweight application that’s easy to use directly on the scalp. This method contrasts with conventional products that often feature heavy oils that can make application messy and ineffective.
Innovative Protection Technologies
Kolmar plans to expand its offerings in this new category by introducing additional products in spray and mist formats, alongside cleansing solutions for sun protection. The launch of these innovative sunscreen products in the Korean market is scheduled for this year, followed by an international rollout into the American market next year.
Additionally, the company is developing a composition for hair sun protection. With hair constantly exposed to harmful UV rays that could cause color fading, dryness, and brittleness, these new solutions address a gap in existing hair care products, which have typically prioritized thermal damage protection.
To combat light-induced damage, Kolmar Korea has devised a special technology. This proprietary formula employs silicone-based oils characterized by large molecular structures and high refractive indices, effectively diffusing light and thereby minimizing the necessity for stabilizers and additional solvents that usually add weight to hair products. The lightweight nature of this technology not only protects but can potentially be enriched with active ingredients like biotin, panthenol, and niacinamide, serving multiple functions such as reducing hair loss and soothing the scalp.
Standardizing Sun Protection Evaluation
In addition to product innovations, Kolmar Korea has introduced a novel standardized method to measure the efficacy of UV protection for hair. Previously, there was no uniform approach to determine the effectiveness of hair sun protection. This method includes analyzing color changes in hair before and after UV exposure to assess damage levels effectively. This research was prominently featured in the international dermatological journal, Skin Research and Technology, which recognized the study for its significant scientific contributions.
A Promising Future
As the global market for sunscreen products evolves, the demand for solutions catering to the scalp and hair continues to rise swiftly. According to a Kolmar Korea representative, “Utilizing our R&D capabilities for product formulation, material innovation, and effectiveness assessment, we aim to cement our leadership position in the next generation of hair sunscreen products.”
Recognized as a key player in the solar market, Kolmar Korea holds over 70% of the Korean sunscreen market share. The company was also the first in the Korean cosmetic industry to gain FDA approval for over-the-counter products back in 2013. Furthermore, it has recently established the “UV Tech Innovation Lab” to enhance R&D capabilities focused on UV protection.
Most recently, Kolmar's skincare innovations, developed collaboratively with renowned K-Beauty brands like Beauty of Joseon, SKIN1004, and Round Lab, have seen over 100 million units sold globally. The company is dedicated to continuing its mission to innovate and lead in skincare and sun protection, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive UV defense in modern beauty routines.
