HealthWell Foundation Launches Fund for Cancer Home Care Support
In a meaningful step to support patients battling cancer, the HealthWell Foundation has announced the launch of a new fund dedicated to covering home care services and durable medical equipment (DME) costs. This independent non-profit organization strives to help underinsured Americans facing medical hardships, and this new initiative aims to alleviate some of the financial strain associated with cancer treatment.
The
Cancer Home Care Services Fund provides a one-time grant of up to
$2,000 that can be utilized over a 12-month period. This aid is primarily designed for home health services or necessary medical equipment, which must be provided by a Medicare-certified provider. To qualify for this assistance, patients must have an annual income of no more than
500% of the federal poverty level and must possess either an active or previous oncology fund grant from HealthWell.
Cancer treatment is often accompanied by significant challenges, not only concerning the physical health of patients but also the mental and financial pressures that families face. Adequate home care services and the right equipment can enable patients to stay in a familiar environment during their recovery period, surrounded by loved ones. Don Liss, MD, a board member of the HealthWell Foundation, stated, “Cancer can cause families to struggle with much more than hospital and outpatient care. Providing grant funding for care in the home removes a barrier and allows families to keep their loved one safe and comfortable.”
Moreover, the financial burden connected with acquiring in-home services or medical equipment can become overwhelming. Consequently, this fund is indispensable in easing that burden, helping families to concentrate on what truly matters: providing care and support to their loved ones without added stress brought on by financial worries.
Dr. Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer at the
American Cancer Society, emphasized the importance of such resources when he noted, “For the first time, more than
2 million new cancer cases are projected in
2024—that’s nearly
5,500 diagnoses each day. The financial toxicity that arises from cancer treatment is well-documented.” He applauded the HealthWell Foundation for launching this vital initiative, asserting that no one should have to compromise their care due to financial limitations.
Home care services not only provide essential medical assistance but also grant patients a sense of normalcy and comfort during turbulent times. The chance to recuperate in a familiar setting, supported by family members, can significantly enhance a patient's mental and emotional well-being.
