Celebrating the FIFA World Cup 2026: A Special Commemorative Coin
The excitement for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 is palpable as Canada prepares to co-host one of the largest sporting events on the globe. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a striking new $1 circulation coin. This release marks a significant milestone, as the 2026 World Cup will be hosted across three countries: Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Canada will proudly host matches in iconic cities such as Toronto and Vancouver, including games featuring the Canadian men's national team.
On May 14, 2026, in a ceremony held at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, officials from the Royal Canadian Mint along with FIFA representatives revealed the stunning design of the commemorative coin. Available in both colored and non-colored versions, this piece is not just a collectible but a symbol of pride for Canadians as they welcome soccer fans from around the world.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 represents a historic moment for our country, and this $1 coin embodies the pride and unity that comes with hosting the world within our communities,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance.
As Minister Champagne highlighted, the power of sport to unite people is profound in Canada. This event aligns perfectly with the country’s recent investment of $755 million in sports, the largest in two decades. The new coin serves as a tangible salute to a global event expected to bring significant economic benefits and inspire future generations of Canadian soccer enthusiasts.
Simon Kamel, the interim president of the Royal Canadian Mint, expressed his excitement stating, “We are thrilled to mark this milestone by highlighting the first-ever men's World Cup matches taking place in Canada. This coin will serve as a keepsake for fans, reminding them of the moment when supporters rallied behind their team in this inaugural World Cup on Canadian soil.”
The Design and Symbolism of the Coin
The reverse side of the coin features a remarkable design by Canadian artist Glen Green. This artwork showcases the iconic Canadian maple leaf mosaic, enhanced by vibrant shades of red and orange on the colored coins, symbolizing the unity among fans cheering for their soccer heroes. The official emblem of the FIFA World Cup 2026 is etched on the left, while a moving soccer ball is depicted on the right, nestled above the names of the two Canadian host cities: Toronto and Vancouver. Surrounding these elements are the inscriptions “FIFA WORLD CUP 26” and “COUPE DU MONDE DE LA FIFA 26”. The obverse side features the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, rendered by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
Vittorio Montagliani, FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President, announced how this special coin signifies a new chapter in Canada’s history. “Across the nation, Canadians will be able to hold this special coin in their hands. It represents much more than a competition; it embodies Canada's role as a host for this global event and the excitement that comes as we prepare to welcome the world this summer.”
Toronto and Vancouver will host a total of 13 matches from June 11 to July 19, 2026, making this an incredibly thrilling time for Canadian soccer fans, especially since the national men's team has qualified for the tournament.
The limited edition $1 commemorative coin, with a mintage cap of three million pieces – including two million in the colored version – officially entered circulation on May 14, 2026. As banks and businesses replenish their coin stock, this coin will gradually become available to the Canadian public.
Alongside the new $1 coin, collectors will also find sets featuring three 25-cent coins showcasing themes such as “Canada Welcomes the World” and “The Match,” along with the official mascot of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Notably, each set will be unique, as variable data printing will create diverse color variations using the official FIFA palette.
Special rolls of 25 coins are also available in both colorized and uncolored formats, along with a presentation box containing both versions of the commemorative coin and the special edition rolls.
