Seibu Shibuya is set to host an enchanting exhibition featuring the works of renowned contemporary artist
Junji Kawashima from
August 27 to September 8. Located on the 8th floor of the B building in the Art Gallery and Alternative Space, this exhibit—titled
Animal Graffiti Series—showcases an impressive collection of 26 vibrant prints that breathe life into the world of modern art.
Junji Kawashima is known for his unique take on the
Rimpa style, a traditional Japanese painting method that he has skillfully blended with contemporary elements. His ability to transform animals into playful art pieces is evident in the diverse array of prints displayed, including playful depictions of green elephants, red cows, and blue lions, all characterized by their striking colors and playful movements. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to delve into the captivating imagination of Kawashima and his artistic journey.
About Junji Kawashima
Junji Kawashima was born in
Tokyo in
1957. He completed his studies at the
Tokyo University of the Arts in
1981, where he was awarded the Salon de Printemps Prize for his graduation project. After furthering his studies and receiving his doctorate in
1986, he gained notable recognition participating in the
Sydney Biennale. His career is marked by several prestigious awards, including the
Yamatane Art Museum Prize and the
Goto Cultural Prize for Emerging Artists in 1995.
Kawashima's artistry has taken him on journeys around the world, culminating in an artistic exploration in
Ireland and the
UK supported by the Goto Memorial Foundation. His works have been featured in numerous individual exhibitions across various department stores and galleries, showcasing his evolution as an artist and his contributions to the modern art landscape.
Kawashima’s work, infused with humor and innovation, resonates with audiences of all ages. The
Animal Graffiti Series reflects his encounters with various creatures, transforming them into expressive forms of art that invite viewers into a whimsical realm.
