Kraken's Groundbreaking Achievement in Energy Management
In a significant announcement on July 16, 2025, Kraken unveiled that its home energy assets have surpassed the impressive milestone of 2GW, establishing itself as a leader in residential virtual power plants (VPPs). This innovation seamlessly integrates over 500,000 devices, including electric vehicles (EVs), home batteries, and heat pumps, driven by an AI-powered operating system. This monumental achievement marks Kraken's commitment to providing flexible and sustainable energy solutions globally.
Virtual Power Plants play a crucial role in balancing peak electricity demand and alleviating congestion in regional grids. By intelligently scheduling the charging of EVs and domestic heating when electricity demand is low and abundant with green energy, Kraken is constructing a more sustainable and resilient energy framework. This technology is particularly suitable for contemporary society, where electricity demand is surging.
Through its advanced system, Kraken is currently managing a sprawling network of devices, providing real-time control over more than 2GW of energy assets. Its optimization strategies empower consumers with annual savings exceeding $200 million, while simultaneously contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and relieving strain on the electrical grid.
As the adoption of low-carbon technologies continues to rise, everyday consumers are becoming pivotal players in the energy ecosystem. With their capacity to store several days' worth of household electricity, EVs are evolving from mere transportation vehicles into powerful energy storage solutions. These smart devices are capable of shifting demand intelligently, ensuring that energy is supplied when it is most needed, thereby enhancing grid resilience and lowering emissions.
Amidst this transformative landscape, Kraken is collaborating with new partners like E.ON Next in the UK and MAINGAU Energie in Germany to broaden their intelligent demand management services for households across Europe. Existing partners, such as Octopus Energy, are also contributing to expanding the range of flexibility services available to more families.
The flexibility services Kraken offers are part of a broader strategy for optimizing large-scale energy assets. Controlling about half of the UK’s grid-scale batteries, Kraken is fostering extensive partnerships with utility operators, energy retailers, and traders to ensure battery sites can profit in competitive markets.
Moreover, Kraken is innovating towards advancing the societal implementation of low-carbon technologies. As a co-founder of the Mercury Consortium—a public-private partnership—Kraken is working towards creating an “energy version of Bluetooth.” This initiative aims to enable seamless integration and connectivity of devices such as EVs, heat pumps, home solar panels, and batteries, regardless of manufacturer or utility company.
Wren White, General Manager of Kraken's home flexibility division, encapsulated the spirit of this initiative: “We are building an energy system that is not only clean and smart but also genuinely consumer-driven. This energy transition is being driven with the consumer, for the consumer. Households are taking the lead, driving change, reducing costs, and supporting a stronger grid every day.”
