Workers at Herc Rentals Begin Strike Demanding First Contract and Reinstatement

Herc Rentals Workers Strike for Fair Contract

Upper Marlboro, MD – April 21, 2025 – Workers at Herc Rentals, represented by Teamsters Local 639, have initiated an unfair labor practice strike after the company failed to present an acceptable first collective bargaining agreement. The decision to strike was made following more than six months of negotiations that the workers deemed insufficient after rejecting the company’s final offer.

Representatives from Teamsters Local 639 assert that not only did Herc Rentals neglect to provide a fair contract, but the company also violated labor laws by terminating the lead organizer and a member of the negotiating committee. This led to further grievances from the union, prompting them to file for an unfair labor practice (ULP).

The strike aims to secure the workers' right to a contract that includes wage increases and comprehensive health insurance benefits. Additionally, the team is insisting on the reinstatement of their colleague who was allegedly unjustly fired from his position.

The strike efforts are taking place daily at their location at 8400 Westphalia Rd., and the union mobilizes its members from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during this period.

“Today marks a significant step in our quest for fair treatment and recognition by Herc Rentals. We have fought long and hard for this moment, and we will remain unwavering until our demands are met,” stated a spokesperson from Teamsters Local 639.

The union underscores the importance of solidarity among its members during this challenging time. They are committed to advocating for their rights and ensuring that workers are treated with dignity and respect within the workplace.

In light of the strike’s initiation, discussions among union leadership are ongoing to determine the next steps and how best to support striking members. The union has made it clear that Herc Rentals will need to negotiate in good faith to resolve the current disputes and provide the contracts necessary for the workers' well-being.

Teamsters Local 639 has remained active in engagement, encouraging community support and awareness about the workers’ plight and the ongoing negotiations with Herc Rentals. The local chapter has been holding meetings and briefings to keep members informed and motivated throughout the strike.

As of now, striking workers remain hopeful for a rapid resolution, insisting that they will stand firm for as long as it takes to achieve fair conditions at their workplace. They urge the management at Herc Rentals to return to the negotiating table and address their legitimate concerns promptly.

This situation reflects a growing trend across various sectors where workers are increasingly standing up against practices they deem unfair, seeking to improve their working conditions and rights within their industries.
