The 4th Social Intrapreneur Forum by Marui Group
Marui Group, headquartered in Nakano, Tokyo, is set to host the 4th Social Intrapreneur Forum (SI Forum). This initiative, which began in 2022, aims to promote a new way of working and living for those who operate within an organization while actively addressing social issues. The concept of
Social Intrapreneurs (SIs) is at the core of this forum, cultivating a unique cultural approach that integrates social responsibility into corporate identity.
Focus on Social Intrapreneurship
The significance of the SI Forum is illustrated by its status as the only continuous event in Japan that concentrates specifically on social intrapreneurship. The upcoming forum will feature prominent speakers, including the company's CEO Hiroshi Aoi and external director Peter D. Pedersen, alongside social intrapreneurs and executives from various corporations who support their efforts. This year’s discussions will revolve around the theme of “Building a Corporate Culture Where SIs Can Thrive.”
Attendees can expect stimulating talk sessions that delve into how organizations can foster environments conducive to social initiatives. Networking opportunities will also be provided for in-person participants, allowing them to connect with speakers and other attendees to exchange ideas and experiences.
Origin of the Theme
The theme for the 4th forum, “Building a Corporate Culture Where SIs Can Thrive,” emerged from ongoing dialogues and case studies related to social intrapreneurship both domestically and internationally. Marui Group has been dedicated to raising awareness of SIs through various efforts, such as translating and publishing impactful guidebooks and establishing the SI community which continues to expand.
Starting in 2021, the group conducted surveys with 76 companies and organizations, engaging 111 respondents to identify unique challenges around promoting social responsibility within Japanese organizations. The insights revealed specific barriers that SIs face, allowing the group to focus on supporting individual intrapreneurs from 2022 to 2024.
Evolving Initiatives
Recognizing the need for both organizational and individual level interventions, the forum is evolving to include collaborative events that engage multiple companies. This shift reflects Marui Group's commitment to creating a transformative atmosphere for social intrapreneurs, ultimately leading to meaningful corporate changes. As they progress, the group hopes to leverage their insights into fostering a culture where social innovation thrives.
Previous Initiatives and Future Outlook
Since hosting the inaugural SI Forum in 2022, Marui Group has witnessed significant growth in awareness and connectivity among social intrapreneurs. They launched the
Japan Social Intrapreneur Initiative (JASII), designed to empower members and companies while focusing on four key themes: talent development, matching platforms, event planning, and media outreach. In July, they took a significant step by establishing the SI Development Foundation, which will be pivotal in supporting ongoing and future initiatives.
In September 2022, to further the mission of social intrapreneurship, they translated and published “The Intrapreneur's Guide to Pathfinding,” a guide illustrating how to foster a new work-life approach focused on resolving societal challenges. The book serves as a vital resource for aspiring intrapreneurs in Japan.
