Cereals Canada Releases 2025 New Wheat Crop Report
Cereals Canada, the national association representing the Canadian cereal grains value chain, is back with its annual New Wheat Crop Report for 2025. This comprehensive report was produced for both global and domestic customers of Canadian wheat, providing crucial insights into the milling performance, flour, semolina quality, and functionality of the latest wheat harvest.
Highlights of the 2025 Wheat Crop
Dean Dias, the CEO of Cereals Canada, shared optimism regarding the 2025 crop yielding another high-quality product that meets customer expectations. Canada is poised to retain its position as the world's third-largest wheat exporter and the premier supplier of high-protein wheat. In the 2025-2026 period, it is projected that 27.4 million tonnes of wheat will be distributed across more than eighty international markets.
In total, the Canadian farmers managed to harvest approximately 36.6 million tonnes of wheat, with an impressive majority classified as grades No. 1 or No. 2. Despite some variability in weather conditions across the Prairie provinces, timely mid-summer rains resulted in yields that exceeded the average. In Eastern Canada, the climate proved favorable throughout the growing season, leading to robust yields of winter wheat, reflecting both strong quality and quantity.
Wheat protein content was reported to be in line with averages, and all wheat classes from the 2025 harvest showed promising quality indicators, including good test weights and higher-than-average thousand kernel weights, particularly among the Western composites.
Engaging with Global Markets
This year marks a significant milestone for Cereals Canada, as part of its New Crop outreach initiative. The organization plans to engage with a diverse array of twenty-nine countries that imported $8.2 billion worth of Canadian wheat in 2024. Included in this initiative is the presentation of technical data for the 2025 crop through two customer webinars scheduled for November 18 and 19.
To gather the detailed information for the report, Cereals Canada utilized its Harvest Assessment Program, which typically focused only on Western Canada. For the first time, the current year’s report includes assessments of Eastern wheat classes, thanks to a collaborative effort with Grain Farmers of Ontario. This expansive analysis allows for a more comprehensive and representative overview of Canada's entire wheat production.
Elaine Sopiwnyk, Vice President of Technical Services at Cereals Canada, commented on this development, stating, "This was a milestone year for Cereals Canada. Having the opportunity to analyze wheat from across the country broadened the expertise of our technical team and streamlined our report's preparation process."
The preparation of the New Wheat Crop Report involves collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, including the Canadian Grain Commission and provincial grower commissions. Throughout the harvest season, Cereals Canada worked closely with exporters and Grain Farmers of Ontario to acquire representative samples from regions including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
