Gregg Foreign Language School's New Campus in Shin-Okubo
The Tokyo Business Academy recently completed the renovation of its Gregg Foreign Language School, with a grand reopening scheduled for October 2025. Located in Shin-Okubo, the new campus boasts an exterior design inspired by sailing ships, symbolizing the “learning voyage” that students will embark upon in pursuit of their futures.
Concept of the New Campus
In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the new Shinjuku campus is envisioned as a “terminal station to the world,” catering to students from various countries who will learn and interact within its premises. The design promotes connectivity among students, staff, and the local community through terraces, cafés, and library lounges, reinforcing its role as a hub for global education.
Architectural Design Features
The campus's entrance welcomes visitors with wooden louvers, inspired by the “wake” or waves created by a boat as it moves through water. This introduction to the building is both warm and symbolic, setting the tone for what Gregg represents—a starting point for new journeys.
On the top floor lies a library—a sanctuary of calm that contrasts with the bustling classroom environment. With a ceiling height of 4.1 meters, the library features indirect lighting that enhances the tranquil and sophisticated ambiance, allowing students to gather their thoughts and engage in focused study in this special space.
Additionally, the campus includes a sky deck on the fourth to sixth floors offering stunning views of Shinjuku. This open area serves as a peaceful retreat where students can relax or engage in discussions, seamlessly blending leisure with learning. The campus's design emphasizes small class sizes, with many classrooms providing direct access to the deck, fostering an open atmosphere.
A Campus Open to the Community
The first floor will house a café encouraging student interaction—a place for ideas and innovations to flourish. The design aims to be bright and welcoming, inviting local residents to visit and enjoy the space. Future plans include hosting open campus activities and community-engaged events to build bridges of learning and collaboration within the area.
Message from the Chairman
Chairman Yoshioka Koju expressed his vision for the new school, stating, “We will develop a global community where diverse cultures meet and blend, creating new values right here in Shin-Okubo. Encountering + Blending = Creation, and then departing—this building will serve as a ‘terminal station’ for learning, connecting the world to Tokyo and Tokyo to the world.”
