The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, known as 日本フィル, will showcase their brilliant brass players at the Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall Small Hall on January 27, 2026. This event, titled "横浜アンサンブル・ワンダーランドVol.3~横浜に輝くブラス・アンサンブルの夕べ~", promises an evening filled with enchanting swing music and engaging dialogues with the artists.

What is Yokohama Ensemble Wonderland?

Yokohama Ensemble Wonderland is a concert series that started in June 2023, related to the Japan Phil’s ongoing 50-year history and over 400 concerts of the "日本フィル横浜定期演奏会". It provides a unique opportunity to experience the individual artistry and personality of each Japan Phil musician up close as they perform in the venue’s intimate setting. The event is held annually, featuring a program that highlights the charm of ensemble performances in the first half, followed by a Q&A session with the musicians, allowing the audience to interact with them. Additionally, there are giveaways of signed merchandise, enriching the concert experience.

Vol.3 Features the Brass Section - JPO Brass Quintet

In its third edition, the program showcases the Japan Phil's outstanding brass section, celebrated by critic Yoshimichi Okuda for its remarkable achievements among metropolitan orchestras. The ensemble consists of five talented musicians:
Ottaviano Cristofori (Solo Trumpet)
Nobuki Inukai (Trumpet)
Seki Nobusue (Horn)
Yuta Ito (Trombone)
Kazuto Yanagi (Tuba)

They have curated a program designed to highlight the best of brass ensemble music, performing pieces such as Verdi's
Nabucco Overture, Evald's Brass Quintet No. 2, and selections from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Evald's second brass quintet stands as a masterpiece, drawing out each instrument's unique appeal with beautiful melodic lines. As Evald was also a cellist, this work reflects classical chamber music at its finest, making it a beloved piece among brass enthusiasts.

The concert's highlight,
Porgy and Bess, represents a fusion of classical opera with jazz, blues, and gospel traditions drawn from African American music. Its swinging rhythms and rich melodies are compelling when performed by brass instruments, inviting the audience into an American musical landscape. The five musicians will showcase their intricate teamwork and the vibrant sounds characteristic of brass instruments, promising a magical evening in Yokohama.
