The Sunhak Peace Prize 2025: Recognizing Champions of Global Change
The Sunhak Peace Prize, a prestigious global award celebrating outstanding contributions to world peace and sustainability, held its 2025 ceremony on April 11 at the Crystal Ballroom of the Lotte Hotel World in Seoul, South Korea. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the prize, which honors individuals making significant impacts in ecological sustainability, global citizenship, and innovative educational approaches. Over 750 international guests, including top politicians, former heads of state, and civil society representatives, gathered to witness this momentous occasion.
Among the esteemed awardees was
Wanjira Mathai from Kenya, recognized for her exceptional leadership in environmental restoration through initiatives such as the
AFR100 and the
Green Belt Movement. Her relentless efforts have led to the reforestation of damaged lands across Africa, with the planting of over 51 million trees to restore ecosystems.
Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of
Global Citizen, received accolades for his commitment to fostering global citizenship. Under his leadership, Global Citizen raised over $43 billion, directly improving the lives of more than 1.3 billion individuals by addressing issues of poverty, healthcare, education, and access to essential services.
The award for transforming higher education in Africa was presented to
Patrick Awuah Jr., founder and president of
Ashesi University in Ghana. His visionary approach to education emphasizes ethics, equality, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Today, Ashesi University is regarded as a pioneer institution producing graduates equipped to drive positive social change in Africa and beyond.
A special recognition, the founder's award, went to former Nigerian President
Goodluck Jonathan for his pivotal role in ensuring peaceful democratic transitions and promoting good governance. Additionally,
Samuel Radebe from South Africa was acknowledged for his commitment to interfaith harmony and peace throughout Africa. An award intended for
Xanana Gusmão, the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
