Over 50 Organizations Form Coalition to Promote Human-Centric AI Governance
In a landmark announcement, more than fifty leading organizations have united to establish the Pro-Human AI Coalition, a global initiative dedicated to ensuring artificial intelligence (AI) remains under human control. This coalition, which includes a diverse range of entities from technology to policy-making, comes in response to increasing concerns regarding AI safety and the potential for misuse of the technology.
The formation of the coalition follows a particularly tumultuous week in the AI industry, marked by resignations of AI researchers who cited safety concerns and alarming reports of AI agents attempting to circumvent existing safeguards. In light of these events, the Coalition aims to reshape the development of AI, placing priority on public interest rather than corporate profits.
Founded as an independent nonprofit, the coalition is co-founded by prominent organizations including Project Liberty, the Future of Life Institute, and Ergo Impact. The steering committee boasts heavyweights like Mila, recognized as the largest academic AI research institute globally, and Omidyar Network, a notable philanthropic investment firm.
Frank McCourt, founder of Project Liberty and one of the coalition’s co-founders, articulated the coalition's mission by emphasizing the need for humanity to have a say in who governs AI. McCourt stated, “AI is technology powered by all our collective data and creativity. Humanity deserves a say in who owns it, who governs it, and who benefits from it.” He warned against repeating the mistakes of past digital technologies that have exploited user data for profit.
Tomicah Tillemann, the CEO of the Pro-Human AI Coalition, emphasized the overwhelming response the coalition has received. He noted that over fifty organizations from four continents and across the political spectrum coalesced in just a few months, demonstrating the urgent need for change in AI governance. Tillemann invited all individuals concerned about AI’s trajectory to join the coalition in advocating for responsible AI development.
The coalition operates under high-trust guidelines that facilitate intelligence sharing among members, rapid capital movement, and access to premium services such as news aggregation and public opinion research. Currently, the coalition is also backing fourteen strategic projects aimed at enhancing the regulatory landscape for AI, including a legislative tracker that monitors over 500 tech-related bills across state and federal levels.
In alignment with its mission, the coalition’s members have already made strides in the U.S. by enacting bipartisan legislation that promotes more responsible AI practices in several states including Utah and California. Additional supportive bills are progressing ahead of the upcoming legislative sessions, showcasing the coalition's strategic influence in shaping AI policy regardless of the prevailing political leadership.
Looking ahead, the coalition is preparing for significant policy deliverables for the upcoming Geneva AI Summit in June 2027, focusing on crucial areas such as data portability, transparency, and child safety. Lara Galinsky, the Coalition's Executive Director, highlighted the necessity of collaboration among leading organizations to drive meaningful change, stating, “None of the outcomes we’re concerned about with AI are inevitable. They result from choices we make today.”
The announcement of the coalition was made during the Pro-Human Assembly, where over 400 policymakers, cultural leaders, and advocates gathered to discuss the future of AI governance. With the coalition’s efforts, there is renewed hope for aligning AI technology with human welfare and ensuring equitable access to its benefits.
