Fagron Sterile Services Awarded Grant for Emergency Sterile Water Production

Fagron Sterile Services Awarded Grant to Enhance Emergency Preparedness

On May 29, 2025, Angels for Change announced an important partnership with Fagron Sterile Services US (FSS), awarding them a significant grant under the 2025 Project PROTECT initiative. This strategic collaboration aims to produce Sterile Water for Injection (SWIFI), a vital component for the preparation of injectable medications crucial for patient care.

The need for such a grant comes in light of past crises, particularly following the disruptions caused by hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. These natural disasters resulted in SWIFI shortages, severely affecting patient care across the nation. By proactively addressing this issue, the partnership between Angels for Change and Fagron Sterile Services aims to enhance the U.S. healthcare infrastructure and ensure continuous access to essential medicines during emergencies.

Laura Bray, the founder and Chief Change Maker at Angels for Change, emphasized the need for a proactive approach: “We must be ready to activate onshore supply of life-saving medicines vulnerable to shortage. Project PROTECT creates a network of trusted manufacturers ready to supply the American people during a crisis. We’re grateful for Fagron’s continued partnership and commitment to patient care.”

Fagron plans to utilize the grant funds for critical capital investments to immediately boost the production and distribution of SWIFI. This proactive measure reflects a transformative shift towards strengthening emergency preparedness in U.S. healthcare, ensuring that hospitals and health systems can effectively respond to potential shortages.

The Bold Predictive Approach of Project PROTECT
Launched in 2022, Project PROTECT is a national initiative focused on funding 503B outsourcing facilities to proactively manufacture medications at risk of shortages based on predictive data. This initiative has already played a crucial role in securing access to over 750,000 patient treatments during three significant national shortages in its initial years. Moreover, it was recently recognized as one of CNN's top healthcare stories of 2023 due to its impactful contributions to healthcare.

Ray Dixon, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at Fagron Sterile Services US, expressed the importance of this partnership: “We’re proud to once again partner with Angels for Change through Project PROTECT to help safeguard access to essential medicines. Sterile Water for Injection is foundational to hospital care, and shortages can have real consequences for patients. This grant allows us to act quickly and meaningfully in support of healthcare providers nationwide. It's an honor to be trusted with this responsibility—for the second time—and we remain deeply committed to being part of the solution.”

Fagron's Commitment to Strengthening U.S. Supply Chains
Fagron has established itself as a trustworthy provider of high-quality medications for over 35 years, with a commendable track record of supporting hospitals and health systems, especially during crises. As a global leader in pharmaceutical compounding, Fagron's collaboration enhances stability and fortifies the national health preparedness strategy, making it a pivotal player in the U.S. healthcare landscape.
