Groundbreaking of a New Solar Facility in San Antonio Marks a Green Future
Groundbreaking Ceremony for El Patrimonio Solar Facility
On May 13, 2026, a significant step towards sustainability was taken as leaders from Ashtrom Renewable Energy, alongside CPS Energy and other notable partners, celebrated the groundbreaking of El Patrimonio, a new solar facility located in Bexar County, near San Antonio, Texas. This project reflects a growing trend towards renewable energy adoption and showcases collaboration among various stakeholders committed to reducing carbon footprints.
The construction of El Patrimonio began in 2025 and is expected to reach completion by 2027. Once operational, it is projected to provide electricity to approximately 37,000 households, showcasing the facility's capability to serve a substantial number of residents. Furthermore, the project is estimated to decrease carbon emissions by about 193 tons annually, underscoring its environmental significance.
Yitsik Mermelstein, CEO of Ashtrom Renewable Energy, emphasized the importance of this project in their ongoing commitment to sustainable energy solutions. He stated, "This is an exciting day for Ashtrom Renewable Energy and a major milestone in our continued commitment to delivering sustainable, reliable energy solutions. We want to thank our partners, including CPS Energy, SOLV Energy, Bexar County, and the City of San Antonio for their collaboration, vision, and support bringing this project to life."
CPS Energy, a key player in Texas's energy sector as the state's leading buyer of solar energy, played a critical role in the project. Frank Almaraz, COO of CPS Energy, noted, "Today's groundbreaking and partnership with Ashtrom helps maintain our leadership position. Renewable energy is also a key part of delivering on our diverse generation plan to meet our growing population's needs."
SOLV Energy is partnering with Ashtrom Renewable Energy to ensure the project is executed safely and efficiently. CEO George Hershman highlighted SOLV's commitment to both construction and operational phases, pointing out the shared vision with Ashtrom and the importance of fulfilling Texas's energy requirements.
The partnership operates under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with CPS Energy, stipulating that this municipally-owned utility will buy approximately 70% of the energy produced. Ashtrom will then offer the remaining output on the open Texas electricity market, expanding the reach of this renewable project.
