Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
In an innovative initiative aimed at integrating theory with practical application, Miroku Jyoho Service (MJS) has collaborated with Tama University to enhance the learning experience of its third-year business students. MJS, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, specializes in the development and sale of financial and accounting systems. Their product, `Kantan Cloud Accounting`, has been utilized in the `Mochizuki Seminar` for students in the Faculty of Management Information. This marks the third collaboration of its kind, which aims to provide students hands-on experience with industry-standard accounting software.
One of the challenges faced by students learning bookkeeping and accounting is the difficulty in visualizing how the concepts are applied in real business scenarios. The Mochizuki Seminar endeavors to address this gap by allowing students to experience firsthand how their classroom education translates into practical accounting work. MJS has provided access to its `Kantan Cloud Accounting`, enabling students to perform key accounting tasks such as data entry, creation of balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and financial analysis over the course of three classes.
During these sessions, 15 students engaged in structured exercises that reinforced their understanding and confidence in accounting practices. They started with entering transaction data through the software, and subsequently prepared financial statements and conducted financial analysis.
MJS Tax and Management Systems Research Institute (MJS Tax Keikei Kenkyujo) supports this initiative by conducting research that aligns with tax law revisions, corporate law updates, and changes in accounting standards. The institute invites leading experts in various fields, including university professors. Prof. Akihiko Mochizuki from Tama University is also a guest researcher at this institute, which underscores the educational initiative's role in developing qualified professionals with a deep understanding of accounting systems.
Overview of the Seminar Exercises
The seminar, known as the Mochizuki Seminar, is especially designed for third-year students during the spring semester. The breakdown of the exercises is as follows:
| Session | Theme | Content |
|---|
| --- | ---- | ----------- |
| 1 | Journal Entry 1 | Students engaged in inputting daily transactions. |
| 2 | Journal Entry 2 | Continued practice on inputting daily transactions. |
| 3 | Closing & Analysis | Input closing entries, create balance sheets and profit/loss statements, and perform financial analysis. |
Student Feedback
Students who participated in the Mochizuki Seminar shared their experiences, highlighting how the practical application of their knowledge transformed their perception of accounting software. One student expressed: “I thought accounting software was complicated, but using it in class was surprisingly simple. Through entering transactions and completing financial statements, I realized how the knowledge I gained in class applies directly to real-world scenarios.”
Academic Perspective
Prof. Akihiko Mochizuki commented on the value of this experience for students with limited business exposure. He noted that hands-on experience with accounting software is invaluable for practical learning. Observing students diligently working on journal entries, identifying and correcting mistakes, and celebrating when their profit figures matched demonstrated the supportive learning environment fostered in the seminar. Such experiences are expected to greatly benefit their future studies.
