1inch Unveils Aqua: A Game Changer in DeFi Liquidity
1inch, a leading player in the DeFi ecosystem, has announced the public launch of Aqua, a groundbreaking shared liquidity layer that is set to transform the way liquidity providers operate. Unlike traditional decentralized finance (DeFi) systems that rely on liquidity pools, Aqua offers a unique risk-controlled alternative that enhances capital efficiency for liquidity provision. This innovative product was initially introduced to developers back in November 2025, and has now expanded its offerings to the public.
With Aqua, liquidity providers can utilize the same wallet balance across multiple positions without locking their assets within liquidity pools. This flexibility is achieved through a novel protocol where users simply connect their wallets, authorize the use of their tokens, and create liquidity positions that access the available balance. Aqua keeps track of the wallet balance, enabling efficient swaps that streamline transactions into a single atomic operation. In essence, the tokens remain under the user's control until a swap is executed, marking a significant overhaul of traditional liquidity management.
Sergej Kunz, co-founder of 1inch, voiced his thoughts on the limitations of existing liquidity models. He stated, “Current liquidity provision systems are inadequate. One only realizes their shortcomings when presented with an alternative. With Aqua, liquidity providers can finally say goodbye to the inefficiencies they have endured for years.” He emphasized that DeFi requires not just more liquidity, but liquidity that is accessible and adaptable to meet demand.
Alongside the Aqua launch, 1inch is introducing a liquidity reward program called 1inch Network Incentives, powered by Merkl and funded with 10 million 1INCH tokens from the 1inch Foundation and an additional 500,000 USDC from the 1inch DAO. This initiative is designed to stimulate liquidity growth and increase swap activity within supported pairs. Providers stand to benefit from the enhanced capabilities of Aqua as well as potential additional rewards.
According to 1inch, the traditional pool-based system has been a hindrance to the DeFi sector's growth and its ability to onboard capital from traditional finance (TradFi). Presently, liquidity providers forfeit direct custody of their assets by depositing them into pools, while their active capital gets fragmented across multiple protocols, pairs, and price ranges. Research commissioned by 1inch using on-chain analytics reveals that during the first half of 2026, a staggering 85% of liquidity concentrated on major decentralized exchanges (DEX) remained underutilized — equating to around $1.6 billion out of a monitored total of $1.84 billion.
Aqua aims to tackle these inefficiencies by enabling a shared liquidity model where the same wallet balance can simultaneously support multiple positions. For instance, a $100,000 wallet balance could underwrite three positions that collectively account for $300,000 in liquidity, and potentially even higher amounts. Unlike conventional models, where liquidity must be dispersed across various pools and positions, Aqua allows a singular balance to strategically support multiple quotes without borrowing assets.
Users have the flexibility to set positions that are even more focused or anchored to a value depending on their chosen pairs. They can open and close their positions autonomously without any locking periods, with their exposure strictly limited to tokens they hold. If a user's wallet lacks the necessary assets to execute a swap, Aqua refrains from initiating the transfer altogether.
Currently, Aqua is operable across 13 EVM-compatible blockchains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Robinhood Chain, and BNB Chain. Additionally, it rolls out various advanced features such as a liquidity provider leaderboard, an incentives dashboard, liquidity mapping views, batch position creation, and cross-chain profiles. Future plans include the introduction of AI-assisted liquidity provision through 1inch Business MCP, ensuring secure batch implementation.
1inch Aqua has undergone rigorous security audits by eight independent firms, ensuring its architecture remains fully non-custodial. This design guarantees that swaps can only transfer assets currently in the liquidity provider's wallet, thereby eliminating potential risks associated with asset custody. Revocation of authorization further protects users by halting any new executions once confirmed on-chain. Aqua’s framework is also inherently safeguarded against phenomena such as JIT fee sniping, as each position is unique to one holder, negating the chances for bots to exploit shared commission maturation periods.
Despite its robust architecture, liquidity providers must acknowledge that while Aqua affords them greater control, the risks associated with market fluctuations and impermanent loss continue to apply. Aqua is not only about providing an effective alternative but about equipping users with the tools necessary for a transformational experience in DeFi. As 1inch continues to innovate, they reaffirm their commitment to simplifying and democratizing access to decentralized finance for everyone.
