Okura Resort Hakone Gora: A Visionary Destination Set to Open in 2029

In an exciting announcement, Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. and Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. revealed their plans to open the Okura Resort Hakone Gora in 2029. Situated in the renowned hot spring area of Hakone, this resort aims to enhance the region's reputation as a premier tourist destination, appealing to both domestic and international visitors.

Development and Management

Nishimatsu Construction is responsible for the development and ownership of the property, while Hotel Okura will manage the operations of this unique establishment. This marks the introduction of the Okura Resort brand to Japan, highlighting the commitment of Hotel Okura to provide an exceptional hospitality experience rooted in Japanese aesthetics and values. The operational management contract between the two companies was formalized on July 11, 2025.

Hakone: A Hot Spring Paradise

Hakone attracts approximately 20.31 million visitors annually, with about 3.98 million of them staying as overnight guests, indulging in the area's serene hot springs, captivating art museums, and magnificent natural landscapes. This rich influx of tourists is due to Hakone's breathtaking scenery, drawing guests throughout all four seasons.

The Okura Resort Hakone Gora will be located in the Gora area, known for its abundant hot spring resources, and will feature stunning views of the surrounding mountains including Myojogatake. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy key local events, such as the famous Gora Onsen Fireworks Festival, making any stay a memorable one wrapped in the natural beauty of Hakone.

Okura Resort: Beyond Tradition

The Okura Resort brand embodies the deep-rooted “wa” spirit of Japanese hospitality. This new brand aims to create spaces that harmoniously blend tranquility, elegance, and an exceptional service experience. Guests will unwind in a refined environment showcasing the finest regional cuisine and attentive service, all curated to offer the ultimate comfort.

Innovative Design Steeped in Nature

The design of the Okura Resort was helmed by French designer Gwenaël Nicolas from the design studio Curiosity. The concept, “Forest Hideaway,” reflects the symbiotic relationship with Gora's natural surroundings. Inside, warm hues of green and beige set a tranquil tone, with expansive windows throughout the lobby, guest rooms, and public baths designed to ensure that guests remain connected with the breathtaking mountain views.

Luxurious Accommodations with Private Open-Air Baths

The resort will feature a total of 58 guest rooms, spread across two buildings. These rooms are designed to provide ample space, with a standard room area of approximately 63 square meters, including a balcony. Importantly, every room is equipped with its own private open-air bath fed by the healing waters of the Owakudani Hot Springs.

Guests will also enjoy a spacious communal bath, complete with a dry sauna and steam room, in addition to a fine dining restaurant featuring a teppanyaki counter, and a cozy bar lounge. This mix of amenities ensures a tranquil retreat while embracing the area's unique characteristics.
