Leading Executives Discuss Digital Transformation Roles at a Business Architect Workshop

In a recent workshop organized by LTS, executives from seven major companies in Japan convened to discuss the importance of business architects in ensuring successful digital transformation (DX). The event, themed around the role of the business architect, was held in Tokyo and aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration among leaders responsible for driving corporate change.

LTS, a Tokyo-based consulting firm led by President Hiroaki Kabashima, has positioned itself as a key player in guiding organizations through the complexities of DX. Under the facilitation of Masaki Yamamoto, LTS's Senior Executive Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, the workshop provided a platform for information exchange among leaders from prominent companies such as Obayashi Corporation, Orix Bank, Chugai Pharmaceutical, Tokyo Gas, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Ricoh, among others.

Understanding the Role of Business Architect in DX Success

The concept of a business architect is gaining traction in Japan, following its established presence in Western companies where it is recognized as essential to adopting digital solutions. According to the Digital Skill Standards (DSS) released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, business architects are defined as critical personnel for the success of DX initiatives. In the United States, this role is already well-integrated into organizational strategies aimed at transforming business operations and achieving successful digital transitions.

However, Japan still lags in recognizing and implementing this role within its corporate structure. The current deficiency in professionals fitting this description contributes to why many business transformation efforts in Japan remain focused merely on technology implementation rather than fostering the deeper organizational and cultural changes necessary for a true digital evolution.

Workshop Highlights

As this was the inaugural event, it emphasized the theme "Building Future Together with Business Architects Who Learn and Grow Together." Attendees were encouraged to network and gather insights from one another to enhance their collective understanding and strategies for DX and corporate transformation.

The workshop consisted of two main sessions. The first part featured Masaki Yamamoto, who is also a member of the working group responsible for revising the DSS. He presented an overview of the current landscape of transformation professionals and shared the latest trends shaping the future of business architecture.

In the second part, participants were divided into smaller groups to discuss practical experiences and insights on nurturing business transformation leaders, organizational behavior, and structuring initiatives within their companies. This interactive approach facilitated knowledge sharing and reflection on the challenges and successes faced by each organization.

Looking ahead, a second workshop is planned in Osaka, where the conversation around business architecture and its importance in corporate transformation will continue. LTS remains committed to fostering an understanding of the necessity of robust change initiatives across Japanese society while contributing to the enhancement of brand and competitive strength for Japanese companies in the long term.
