Eco-Shrimp Production Experience in Indonesia
From April 14 to April 19, 2023, the Pal System Cooperative Federation, based in Tokyo, held an impactful event in East Java, Indonesia. This substantial gatherin experienced an “open confirmation meeting,” where both consumers and producers jointly evaluated the production methods and quality standards of eco-shrimp. This was the first event of this nature in 18 years, showcasing the alliance between the Pal System users and auditors to inspect shrimp farming and processing facilities.
A Unique Verification System of 25 Years
Since 1999, Pal System has maintained a dialogue between consumers and producers to set production standards. The “open confirmation meetings” ensure that product quality is upheld through direct verification by users. The focus of this latest project, eco-shrimp, is grown using extensive aquaculture practices that utilize the natural terrain and ecosystems. For 25 years, this has been one of Pal System’s flagship international direct procurement items.
Embracing Tradition and Environmental Restoration
During the open confirmation meeting, attendees visited shrimp ponds and processing facilities in Pinrang on Sulawesi Island and Sidoarjo on Java Island. The visits emphasized sustainable aquaculture practices that aim to reduce environmental impact, relying on traditional fishing equipment, such as the bamboo traps known as “Playan,” which boast a history of over 150 years. They also toured mangrove forests, where ATINA has planted approximately 80,000 and 50,000 trees in Pinrang and Sidoarjo, respectively, enhancing the understanding of how aquaculture and environmental conservation can coexist.
Furthermore, they witnessed firsthand how used excavators and juvenile shrimp donated by Japanese consumers after the 2022 flood greatly supported recovery efforts.
Trust Fuels Sustainability
The post-visit audit report emphasized ATINA's rigorous management systems and the robust relationships developed over years of collaboration.
“Production standards and corporate social responsibilities are deeply integrated into the practices here, showcasing a commitment to sustainable aquaculture. The spirit of coexistence is palpable in the mutual respect among ATINA staff, producers, and factory workers as they strive to create high-quality products,” remarked one auditor.
In conclusion, Pal System will continue to pursue food safety and sustainable production through these open confirmation meetings, fostering an environment where consumers can make informed choices while facing social issues and environmental challenges together.
