Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Launch of 347 MWdc SunRoper Solar Project Near Houston
On September 1, 2026, OCI Energy, Arava Power, and their project partners celebrated a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of the 347 MWdc SunRoper Solar project in Wharton County, Texas. This initiative is particularly crucial as it aims to meet the increasing electricity demands of the Houston metropolitan area, one of the largest energy consumption hubs in the United States.
Scheduled to begin operations in December 2027, the SunRoper project will supply electricity through a long-term power purchase agreement with a Fortune 100 company. The construction not only represents an impressive investment in Texas's energy future but also signifies a collaborative effort among key players in the energy sector.
During the ceremony, Sabah Bayatli, President of OCI Energy, remarked, "SunRoper demonstrates how strategic partnerships can help meet Texas's growing demand for electricity through investments in critical energy infrastructure. This milestone marks the beginning of an important new chapter for collaboration between OCI Energy and Arava Power."
The SunRoper project is a joint development venture between OCI Energy and Arava Power, with financing support from ING and construction led by WHC. Ilan Zidkony, CEO of Arava Power, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, "Our collaboration with OCI Energy has been instrumental in advancing this project and strengthens our presence in the United States. This reflects our commitment to building high-quality, long-term renewable energy assets."
Sven Wellock, Head of Renewables Power at ING Capital LLC, added, "The SunRoper project demonstrates what can be achieved when experienced partners come together with a shared commitment to advancing critical energy infrastructure. We are proud to support the vision and leadership of OCI Energy and Arava Power."
The involvement of WHC as the EPC contractor highlights the project's collaborative spirit. Randel Badeaux, President of Power, North America for WHC, addressed the audience by saying, "This groundbreaking reflects months of careful planning and coordination, and we look forward to executing a safe, high-quality build through to completion in 2027."
The significance of the SunRoper project extends beyond just energy generation. Once operational, it will not only contribute a significant new generation capacity to the ERCOT market but also promote economic activity in the region during both the construction phase and the ongoing operational life of the project.
