Modoki: A Safe Haven for Children with Medical Needs
In a significant development for families in need of specialized care, the general incorporated association Life is has announced the upcoming establishment of 'modoki' in the Tamagawa New Town area of Suwa shopping street, Tokyo. This multifunctional space aims to create a safe, inclusive environment for children requiring medical care and their families, preventing isolation and fostering a welcoming community.
The Vision of Modoki
Opening on November 2025, modoki will serve as a multifunctional hub combining various services. It will include a medical short-term facility, a natural wine bar, a private library, and a rest area for visitors. Through these services, modoki seeks to gently intertwine the daily lives of diverse individuals, promoting community engagement and mutual support.
The project launched a government crowdfunding initiative on October 3, setting a target fundraising goal of 1.5 million yen. This initiative not only aims to gather essential funds for the facility's operation but also to create a community-driven support system for those involved.
Understanding the Background
Currently, it’s estimated that approximately 20,000 children across Japan require ongoing medical care, such as ventilators and tube feeding. Medical advances have enabled many to live at home or within their communities rather than in hospitals. However, the accompanying local support systems are still lacking, often leading families into isolation.
A recent survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare indicates that over 71% of caregivers experience chronic sleep deprivation, with about 30% lamenting the absence of family bonding time. Despite the enactment of the 'Medical Care Child Support Act' in 2021, which encourages the establishment of support centers across prefectures, disparities in service availability persist, leaving many families feeling unsupported. As a solution, modoki aims to provide not only a sanctuary for children that require continuous care but also cultivate a supportive community that encourages interpersonal connections and empowerment.
A Message from the Founder
Takuhiko Kagechika, the representative director of Life is, expresses a profound commitment to inclusivity with modoki. He quotes an old proverb, saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” He emphasizes that every individual deserves to be included in the vision of modoki, promoting the coexistence of diverse lifestyles.
The urgency of the needs faced by children with medical care requirements is acute. To expedite realizing this vital community space, your donations will be invaluable. The crowdfunding project is not merely a financial effort but a shared aspiration to create an environment where children and their families can thrive within the community.
Modoki’s Four Functionalities
Short-term Medical Facility: Designed for providing daytime services, the facility will offer extended hours beyond typical shelters, ensuring medical care, as well as bath and dinner services, are available.
Natural Wine Bar: During the day, this space will function as a café and light meal provider, transforming in the evening to offer natural wines and local dishes prepared by community members, integrating the neighborhood’s culinary talents.
Private Library & Select Shop: Operating as both a library and an independent bookstore, this area will invite locals to showcase their favorite books through a box owner system. It will feature a select shop with products from local creators and welfare organizations.
Rest Area: A registration-based area designed for individuals seeking a brief respite from everyday life, allowing them to recharge and find personal empowerment.
