Introducing a Special Eco-Friendly Hotel Plan for Seniors at Izunagaoka Onsen

A Welcoming Initiative for Seniors at Sumiyoshi Kan

Izunagaoka Onsen, nestled in the picturesque setting of Izu, is thrilled to announce a new lodging initiative designed specifically for guests aged 60 and above. Starting November 1, 2025, the historic Sumiyoshi Kan, operated by Unwaikai Co., based in Tokyo, will introduce the "10,000 Yen Eco Stay Senior Discount Plan". This plan will allow seniors to enjoy a comfortable stay, complete with two meals, on selected weekdays for a flat rate of just 10,000 yen including all taxes.

A Response to Demands

The decision to launch this special plan comes after a successful trial period that started on October 15, 2025. During this period, there was a notable increase in bookings and inquiries, particularly from older guests, surpassing initial expectations. Analysis of these findings pointed to a rapidly growing demand for safe and relaxing hot spring accommodations for seniors amidst Japan's demographic shift towards an older population.

Moreover, many seniors opted to bring their own toiletries during their stays, reflecting not only a desire for familiarity and hygiene but also a commitment to reducing environmental impact. This trend aligns with a larger societal move towards eco-friendly practices.

Recognizing this, Unwaikai affirmed the necessity of addressing both the challenges of aging and environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry. Thus, the new senior discount plan was born, focusing on sustainability while catering to the unique needs of older guests.

Details of the Eco-Friendly Plan

The Eco Stay plan encourages couples or groups of seniors to enjoy their holidays affordably while staying in comfort. For 9,850 yen (with an inclusive entry tax of 150 yen bringing the total to 10,000 yen), guests can expect a simplified stay with essential amenities provided for them to bring, reinforcing the eco-conscious concept. If guests forget their personal items, they can rent them for a nominal fee.

The dining experience also highlights health and wellness, featuring a specially curated Japanese dinner that includes lighter fare designed with seniors' health in mind. The menu consists of thoughtfully prepared dishes such as tofu and vegetable simmered dishes, seasonal sashimi, and the daily special pork hot pot. For those who cannot resist fried food, a local specialty, “aji fry,” can be ordered for an additional fee. Breakfast will be served in a traditional style to ensure a calm and enjoyable start to the day.

Manager’s Reflections

General Manager Takamasa Fujii expresses gratitude towards each guest for their encouraging feedback during the trial phase. He emphasizes that the new eco-friendly program aligns with what today's society requires: a focus on the aging population and an awareness of environmental sustainability.

The Sumiyoshi Kan aims to foster a nurturing atmosphere, where the well-being of guests and the planet are both prioritized. This initiative is a crucial step for the establishment as it continues to navigate changes in the hospitality landscape, remaining loyal to its mission of community-centered hospitality while catering to the evolving needs of our society.

As the Sumiyoshi Kan moves forward, it reaffirms its commitment to an operation that is both gentle on nature and considerate of its guests, continually seeking to adapt and flourish in response to the needs and changes of the times.
