Golden Pitch 2026: Unleashing Japan's Future Entrepreneurs
Starting from August 1, 2026, Keizaikai Co. will open applications for 'Golden Pitch 2026', a significant business contest aimed at discovering and supporting emerging companies. This contest began in 2011 as part of the 'Golden Egg Discovery Project', which aimed to rejuvenate Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake. It reflects the chairman, Yumi Sato's vision to provide opportunities to promising enterprises and their leaders, echoing the support given to early-stage entrepreneurs like Masayoshi Son.
As the startup ecosystem in Japan has evolved over the years, the contest will require an update in its evaluation criteria to better reflect the changing challenges faced by entrepreneurs. Beginning in 2026, the contest will feature a two-category evaluation system: the 'Middle Category' and the 'Later Pre-IPO Category', along with a new video presentation requirement to complement the traditional document selection process. This shift acknowledges that a company’s growth potential and traction must also be coupled with an evaluation of the entrepreneur's passion and vision, which are vital in determining the future of Japan's economy.
Roots in Resilience
The initial concept of the Golden Pitch found its roots in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, underscoring Keizaikai's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for emerging businesses. The founder of Keizaikai, Masatake Sato, believed in giving power to the next generation of entrepreneurs, and since its inception, the initiative has supported numerous startups. The cumulative fundraising of past winning companies exceeds 20 billion yen, underscoring the contest's role in propelling these firms into positions of prominence.
Today, Japanese entrepreneurs face increasingly complex challenges as they shift from initial startup phases to scaling their operations and possibly preparing for IPOs. This evolution calls for a fresh framework in the contest aimed at recognizing and validating their efforts, irrespective of their current organizational status. The new dual-division system will allow for distinct evaluation criteria tailored to the differing stages of each participating company.
Structured for Growth
This year's contest will include evaluations based on the respective growth stages of the companies. In the Middle Category, emphasis will be on market potential, growth rate, product-market fit (PMF), competitive advantages, and future growth prospects. Even if the organizational structure is not fully established, clear growth potential will ensure companies are evaluated fairly. Meanwhile, the Later Pre-IPO Category will require attention to traction quality, business reproducibility, revenue models, governance, and the ability to communicate effectively to public markets. Participants in this category will face stringent scrutiny on their growth trajectories, governance, and communication capabilities as they gear up for potential IPOs.
Emphasizing Humanity in Entrepreneurship
Starting this year, in addition to traditional document reviews and final evaluations, a new video selection process will be introduced. Companies that pass the initial document review will be asked to submit a five-minute presentation video. In an era where metrics and traction can dominate assessments, Keizaikai remains steadfast in its belief, rooted in over 50 years of experience, that 'companies are defined by their people.' This belief will remain unchanged, and the video submissions aim to capture the entrepreneurs' passion, commitment, and ability to convey their vision effectively.
Anticipating the Finals
The final evaluation will take place on October 7, 2026, at a venue in Tokyo, where the three finalists from each category will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The selected companies will not only receive recognition but will also gain incentives such as feature interviews in the magazine 'Keizaikai', in addition to an exclusive invitation to the 'Keizaikai Grand Prize' ceremony set for January 2027. This will be a unique networking opportunity featuring Japan's business leaders and influential figures, providing great benefit to the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Bridging Futures
Keizaikai recognizes that the future of Japan's economy depends on the development of lesser-known growth companies and their leaders. Through Golden Pitch 2026, Keizaikai aims to connect high-potential businesses with entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate partners, thereby nurturing the economic challenges Japan faces today. Alongside, on the same day of the event, a new award called 'Keizaikai Legend Venture Award' will be held to honor entrepreneurs who have played a pivotal role in shaping Japan’s venture scene. Attendees can anticipate an inspiring atmosphere where the next wave of entrepreneurs intersects with the seasoned business leaders who have been trailblazers in their own right.
