Air Premia Strengthens Flight Safety with IATA Turbulence Aware

Air Premia, a prominent player in the aviation sector, is set to upgrade its safety measures by integrating the IATA Turbulence Aware tool into its operations, effective March 1, 2025. This innovative initiative is a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and comfort of its passengers, especially when it comes to turbulence management.

The IATA Turbulence Aware tool is designed to provide real-time turbulence data, leveraging reports from various airlines to improve flight safety and enhance passenger experiences. By utilizing information contributed by over 25 airlines operating more than 2,600 aircraft worldwide, Air Premia's flight crews will be equipped with critical data that allows for better avoidance or mitigation of turbulence during flights.

The rising concern regarding turbulence is reflected in recent statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which indicate that airlines encountered 14,802 turbulence instances in the first half of 2024—an alarming 78% increase compared to five years ago. By transitioning from forecast-based responses to real-time data-driven actions, Air Premia aims to secure safer flight paths and effectively address address the challenges posed by turbulent air conditions.

The adoption of the Turbulence Aware system will also aid Air Premia in addressing Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), a type of turbulence that often occurs unpredictably. By accessing real-time data, the airline can adapt its operations dynamically, including adjusting flight paths and timing of services for passengers, thereby reducing the risk of turbulence-related incidents and enhancing overall safety for both passengers and crew.

Moreover, Air Premia is making substantial efforts to cultivate a safety-oriented culture within its operations. The airline plans to share vital turbulence information during pre-flight briefings with both flight and cabin crews, ensuring that all personnel are well-informed and prepared to manage any turbulence encountered during a flight. Additionally, Air Premia is introducing the 'Safety Insight' system from GE Aerospace, a data monitoring tool that helps identify and manage potential risks in-flight, further enhancing operational safety.
