Hampton University Hosts State of the Media Forum

Hampton University, renowned for its excellence in journalism education, is set to host a major forum titled “The State of the Media” on April 23, 2025. This event will bring together industry leaders and aspiring journalists for a critical dialogue about the future of media in America. Headlining the panel is alumna and former MSNBC president Rashida Jones, who is also a member of the Hampton University Board of Trustees.

The forum will begin at 4:30 PM ET and will cover key issues facing today’s media environment. As highlighted by SHSJC Dean Julia A. Wilson, this gathering comes at a time when the landscape of journalism is experiencing unprecedented change and challenges due to the rise of misinformation and digital media.

A Panel of Experts

The panel will feature several notable figures in the media industry, including:
  • - Nyla Cross, a journalism student at Hampton who will serve as the moderator
  • - Maurice Jones, Vice President of News at WHRO Public Media
  • - Angilee Shah, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • - Karima Haynes, Director of the Reporting Fellows Program at the Pulitzer Center
  • - Jeffrey Reece, Director of Content at the Virginian-Pilot.

Importance of the Dialogue

Dean Wilson emphasized that today's media environment is rife with challenges that call for urgent discussions about integrity and the role of journalists. “It seems that viewers, listeners, and readers are bombarded with significant shifts in their assessments of the media landscape,” she stated. Journalists today face the dual task of combating misinformation while striving to maintain high ethical standards in their reporting.

Rashida Jones also noted the vital role of media professionals: “It’s our responsibility to share vetted, truthful information with communities at all levels. We must act as role models for the next generation of journalists.”

Insights for Aspiring Journalists

The forum is not only a discussion amongst media leaders but also a platform for aspiring journalists to glean valuable insights. The panelists will address how they can prepare for a rapidly evolving media landscape while still upholding the principles of accurate and fair reporting.

Participants will gain advice on how to remain hopeful and proactive in their careers, even in the face of uncertainty. They will discuss innovative approaches to journalism that can ensure relevance and truthfulness, reinforcing the importance of fact-based reporting amid changing times.
