Sinopec's First Sustainability Report Highlights Environmental Efforts in Algeria

Sinopec's Commitment to Sustainable Development in Algeria

On December 27, 2024, in Algiers, Sinopec (China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, HKG: 0386) made a significant stride in its operations by releasing its first sustainability report titled, "Sustainability Report on Serving the Construction of the Belt and Road - Sinopec in Algeria." This landmark document represents the first sustainability report published by a Chinese company in Algeria, detailing Sinopec's efforts in addressing economic, safety, ecological, and social responsibilities in the region.

Algeria, the largest country in Africa, boasts the fourth largest economy on the continent. As Sinopec adheres to a vision of open collaboration and mutual benefit, it aims to establish a long-term, sustainable cooperative model that serves the community's interests. This is pursued by integrating oil and gas exploration with environmental protection and social progress.

Sinopec's primary focus in Algeria encompasses oil exploration, development, technology, refining, and chemical engineering. The company has recently signed a new agreement with the state-owned oil and gas company, SONATRACH, regarding the Zarzaitine oil field, further solidifying their partnership.

To uphold its commitment to high-quality standards, Sinopec offers premier services throughout its operations. Notably, its desert water pipeline project addresses drinking water shortages for 50,000 residents in Tamanrasset, an endeavor that has earned recognition for excellence in Chinese-Algerian collaboration.

Sinopec strictly adheres to the relevant safety and environmental regulations in Algeria, continuously enhancing its safety management protocols. Efforts include bolstering environmental controls and implementing eco-friendly construction practices to protect ecological environments and biodiversity.

Within the Zarzaitine oil field, a safety committee has been established, conducting 42 Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) inspections and investing $3.12 million into safety and environmental protection initiatives. Sinopec also actively engages in various community service projects, including tree planting events and waste disposal programs across Algeria.

An emphasis on local workforce development is evident as Sinopec has created nearly 1,000 job opportunities in the Zarzaitine oil field, providing pathways for professional growth and personal development. The company champions community welfare by actively participating in charitable endeavors: repairing wells in remote desert areas to ensure access to clean water, organizing multicultural events, celebrating local cultural festivals, and initiating the "China Bookshelf" project to foster cultural exchange. Additionally, Sinopec has provided medical supplies to local hospitals and educational materials for children, efforts that have garnered widespread appreciation from the local population.

As Sinopec navigates its operations in Algeria, the company remains dedicated to fostering a sustainable future, embodying practices that harmonize economic growth with environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Sinopec’s commitment not only showcases its role as a corporate citizen but sets a precedent for other companies looking to balance profit with purpose in emerging markets.
