Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Commemorates 90 Years of Community Health Support with Generous Grants

Celebrating 90 Years of Service in Health Care

On October 1, 2026, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) proudly marks its 90th anniversary, reminiscing the foundation of its commitment to enhancing the health care landscape in Illinois. For nearly a century, BCBSIL has ensured that 9 million members across 102 counties and more than 1,300 zip codes have had access to quality health care, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the communities they serve.

As part of this historic milestone, BCBSIL is not only reflecting on its past but actively giving back to local communities. This year, they have announced a $90,000 grant program benefiting nine nonprofit organizations making a difference in the health and lives of Illinois residents. This initiative adds to the impressive $4 million in community funding that BCBSIL has already invested throughout the year.

The selected nonprofit organizations, each working tirelessly to tackle key health challenges, include:
  • - My Block, My Hood, My City
  • - The Alzheimer's Association Illinois Chapter
  • - Lake County Hope Elevation Project
  • - Will County National Hook-Up of Black Women
  • - The Immigration Project in Bloomington
  • - Birth to Five Illinois in Springfield
  • - Dreaam in Champaign
  • - This Able Veteran in Carbondale
  • - Caritas Family Solutions in East St. Louis

BCBSIL President Brian Snell expressed gratitude towards their members and the communities for their trust and support over the years. He emphasized that giving back to the community is at the core of their mission, stating, “These grants reflect our commitment to investing in the organizations that are addressing local needs and creating opportunities for healthier futures.”

The grant recipients were able to share their mission and the significant impact these funds will have on their programs. For instance, Delia Jervier, Executive Director for the Alzheimer's Association Illinois Chapter, highlighted the critical role that the grant will play in expanding care and support for the over 250,000 individuals living with Alzheimer's in Illinois, as well as the 465,000 family caregivers who often face overwhelming challenges. She noted that this funding will be crucial for enhancing educational programs and access to resources.

Jahmal Cole, Founder and CEO of My Block, My Hood, My City, shared his excitement about the partnership emphasized by BCBSIL, stating, “This investment is a statement that our neighborhoods matter, that community-led work matters.” Cole acknowledged the importance of local engagement and resources in establishing a healthier Illinois, reinforcing the message that positive community impact is a collective responsibility.

To honor this monumental occasion, BCBSIL employees have set a goal to contribute 90,000 volunteer hours throughout the year to further strengthen their community ties and continue their legacy of service.

As BCBSIL celebrates this incredible milestone, it stands firm in its mission to support the health and wellness of communities throughout the state. By focusing on local organizations and investing in the health of their members, BCBSIL strives to forge a healthier future for all Illinois residents.

With the groundwork laid over the past 90 years, the anticipation for the next 90 years is poised, making it clear that BCBSIL will continue to be a champion for health in Illinois and a leader in community service.
