Decline in Leadership Threatens Global Anti-Corruption Efforts

The latest release of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2025 by Transparency International paints a bleak picture of corruption around the globe. As the fight against corruption becomes increasingly critical, the newly published report reveals a worrying trend: established democracies are regressing in their anti-corruption efforts. The drastic decline in effective leadership is undermining global initiatives to combat corruption, which could have far-reaching implications for governance and civic rights.

Deteriorating Global Landscape

According to the CPI, the number of countries achieving a score above 80—a benchmark for low levels of corruption—has plummeted from 12 a decade ago to merely five today. Transparency International has issued several recommendations for governments worldwide to rekindle political momentum toward the fight against corruption. These include:
1. Reinstating Political Commitment: Authorities should rigorously enforce existing anti-corruption laws, imbue international goals into national frameworks, and enhance transparency and oversight mechanisms.
2. Safeguarding Civic Spheres: Actions against journalists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and whistleblowers must cease immediately. Governments should work towards developing an environment where independent civil society can flourish without fear of persecution.
3. Closing the Secrecy Loopholes: There must be concerted efforts to curb the clandestine movement of corrupt funds across borders. Strengthening beneficial ownership transparency is essential, along with regulating those professionals who inadvertently enable corruption through lax practices.
