SBI's Recent Survey on End-of-Life Planning and Funerals



SBI Ikigai Small Amount Short-Term Insurance Company, based in Minato, Tokyo, conducted an insightful survey regarding end-of-life planning and funerals. This survey garnered responses from over a thousand individuals aged 50 and above, revealing crucial data that emphasizes both the importance of awareness and the actions associated with it. This study marks the 5th iteration for end-of-life activities and the 3rd for funeral-related inquiries, conducted simultaneously to gather comprehensive insights.

The results indicate that while about 80% of respondents acknowledge the necessity of end-of-life planning, only one-third of them have taken actionable steps towards it. When it comes to organizing belongings, a notable 84.4% of individuals who have already begun these tasks reported that they were managing it independently, with only 1.3% opting for professional assistance. Insights on Funeral Preferences


The survey also probed preferences surrounding funerals. The findings revealed that for funerals led by respondents or their partners, the most common cost bracket ranged between 510,000 and 1,000,000 yen, which appealed to 22.9% of them. Many respondents maintained that a budget below 1,000,000 yen ought to be sufficient for their own funerals. The data show a clear discrepancy between experienced funeral costs and personal expectations, revealing a general desire for lower expenditures.

A shift towards simpler and more private funeral arrangements is evident. While 53.9% of participants reported that traditional funerals were the most common form they encountered, 53.4% expressed a preference for family funerals, significantly overshadowing traditional options like general funerals (10.2%). This transition signifies a shifting cultural paradigm surrounding funerals; they are increasingly becoming intimate gatherings rather than large public events.

Similarly, the diversification in funeral disposal methods is on the rise. While 72.9% of respondents had utilized traditional ancestral burial sites, only 38.3% expressed the same preference for their own arrangements. A striking 50% of the participants gravitated toward newer options such as tree burials, columbaria, or sea burials, reflecting a broader trend towards customization in end-of-life services.
