Slovakia Becomes First Country to Officially Join Expo 2027 in Belgrade

Slovakia's Historic Step at Expo 2027

Slovakia has made headlines as the very first nation to officially announce its participation in the upcoming Expo 2027, set to take place in Belgrade, Serbia. This significant decision underscores Slovakia's commitment to fostering international connections and showcasing its cultural heritage on a global stage.

On November 19, 2025, during a ceremonial signing event in Belgrade, both Matej Fekete, the Director General of Slovakia Travel, and Lukáš Parízek, the Commissioner General for the Expo, formally confirmed Slovakia's participation. The official contract was signed in the presence of Serbian officials, including Jagoda Lazarević, Serbia's Minister of Trade, and Danilo Jerinić, the CEO of Expo 2027. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in strengthening Slovak-Serbian relations, and signals Slovakia’s proactive approach toward engaging in international dialogue through this prominent event.

Lukáš Parízek expressed pride in Slovakia’s pioneering role, stating, "I am proud that we are the first country to officially sign the participation agreement for Expo 2027 in Belgrade. This is a significant step for us, as it is one of the largest events a country can host. Our excellent relationship with Serbia now provides us with the opportunity to deepen our ties and present Slovakia not only in the Balkans but to the world at large.”

In addition to the signing, the Slovak delegation engaged with leaders from the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, further cementing collaborative efforts between the two countries. The sentiments were echoed by Matej Fekete, who highlighted the universal themes of the upcoming exposition: "The Expo 2027 in Belgrade is a unique occasion to demonstrate how we can connect nations, embrace cultural diversity, and build sustainable tourism for the benefit of society as a whole. Our participation reaffirms our dedication to promoting Slovakia’s favorable reputation globally while contributing solutions that shape the future for coming generations.”

Expo 2027 is set to commence on May 15, 2027, and will run for 90 days, with more than 120 countries expected to participate and an anticipated attendance of over 4 million visitors. The event will serve as a platform for nations to present their innovations, cultural displays, and sustainable development goals, while also allowing Slovakia to showcase its rich history, natural beauty, and advancements in various sectors.

Slovakia Travel is the national organization responsible for promoting tourism in Slovakia, with a mission to develop tourism in both domestic and international markets. Their engagement in the Expo is a significant opportunity to elevate the country’s profile as a travel destination and to foster economic growth through increased tourism.

As Slovakia takes the lead in this international endeavor, it sets a precedent for collaboration among nations, encouraging others to join in celebrating cultural diversity and sustainable development. The Expo 2027 in Belgrade is poised to be not just a trade event but a global meeting point where friendships are forged, cultures are shared, and the spirit of cooperation thrives.

As the countdown to Expo 2027 begins, all eyes will be on Slovakia and its journey at this prestigious event, which promises to reshape perceptions and strengthen international bonds while celebrating the rich fabric of global society.
