The Thrilling Story of Bentley at Goodwood
The 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed showcased a breathtaking moment in automotive history with the incredible performance of the Pimkana Bentley Supersport. Captured in a single photograph, this image tells a tale of precision, skill, and a unique synergy between driver and photographer.
On July 11, 2026, Bentley Motors unveiled a photograph that symbolizes the essence of the festival. Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed creates memorable moments, but this year, the spectacular scene of the Pimkana Bentley Supersport marked a significant highlight. The vehicle stood at the starting line, its rear tires spinning fiercely, generating thick clouds of tire smoke, and dramatically drifting sideways.
Driving this powerful rear-wheel-drive model, which produces 666 PS, is the professional driver Paul Rees. Timing and technique were captured beautifully by automotive photographer Mark Fegelson, who was positioned a strategic 250 meters away, waiting for that perfect moment to unfold.
The Chase for the Perfect Shot
Mark Fegelson has been capturing images at Bentley's Goodwood event for over a decade. Despite his experience, he acknowledges the challenges that the iconic venue presents. According to Fegelson, securing the right spot for shooting is crucial. “To take the best photo at the starting line, you have to secure a spot near the first corner. It’s a tiny area with space for about 20 photographers, and getting to the front requires good relations with others and a bit of negotiation,” he explained.
This coveted viewing point offers a panoramic view of the starting line and is a hallmark location during the festival when the Duke’s private road transforms into a racing course.
The moment was further enhanced by the beauty of the Pimkana Bentley Supersport itself. “It’s possibly the most attractive Bentley I've seen. It’s truly an extraordinary car,” Fegelson shared.
Preparations for a Defining Moment
Equipped with a 400mm telephoto lens and a camera capable of high-speed sequential shooting, Fegelson was prepared for action. He emphasized that achieving the ideal image relies heavily on meticulous preparation. “The success of such photographs is largely determined before shooting even begins. Standing in the right place, at the right time, with the appropriate gear, and then entrusting it all to the driver,” he stated.
Paul Rees, a seasoned racing and stunt driver, played a pivotal role during this event. Having participated in the development of the Pimkana Supersport for the video ‘Supersports: FULL SEND’ featuring Travis Pastrana, Rees showcased the vehicle’s dynamic debut in the UK, responsible for both time trials and demonstration runs.
Rees shared, “During the time attack, precision and speed are key, and I try not to drift. But later, during the demonstration run, I can let loose and really have fun.” The vehicle had a special modification allowing simultaneous throttle and brake control, essential for achieving impressive burnouts and controlling the car’s delicate positioning at the starting line.
That Unforgettable Moment
As soon as smoke billowed from the rear tires, Fegelson clicked the shutter. The Pimkana Supersport drifted, perfectly capturing a moment that epitomizes Goodwood. “Paul lit up the tires off the start line and maintained that burn. I thought he was going to stop midway, but he kept it going until the end. This is why this photo exists—his remarkable skill as a driver,” recounted Fegelson.
For Fegelson, having witnessed numerous performances over his ten years at Goodwood, this particular scene was exceptional. “Getting the angle this extreme right after the start is incredibly difficult, and not many can push it this far. When the smoke appeared, I knew I had it. I even laughed while taking the shot,” he reflected with joy.
One Chance to Shine
Maintaining the burnout, Rees captivated the audience as he ascended the hill climb with a combination of drift and speed. “I heard the cheers and applause were incredible, thanks to our great partner, Pirelli,” he remarked.
Although the Pimkana Supersport had several runs that day, the perfect combination of angle, tire smoke, and timing occurred only in that moment. Fegelson felt the weight of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I always want to leave with the best result. This photo has become my favorite from all my time at Goodwood,” he recalled.
Rees expressed the pressure he faced performing under such a spotlight: “Getting a fast time is rewarding, but one mistake can turn you from a hero to a failure. If I slip, I embarrass myself in front of my peers. But when it goes well, the thrill is unmatched.”
In conclusion, this photo encapsulates not just a moment in time but a significant story of speed, skill, and the camaraderie of those behind the lens and behind the wheel—a testament to what makes the Goodwood Festival of Speed a truly unforgettable experience.
